Read their book. This is where OAM's ignorance of religion shows.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2007/07/why-are-we-so-scared-of-offending-muslims.html
Are you retarded?
In what way is that article at odds with anything I've ever said about anything???

Tell me more about my ignorance of religion.  As an atheist, the more I know about religions, the more strongly my position is confirmed.

Try to go back to the year 1300 in a Christian-led country and attempt to speak freely about the absurdity of the religion.  Good luck with that.

Why, then, should we be commanded to “respect” those who insist that they alone know something that is both unknowable and unfalsifiable?

The article asks this question, which is fine to ask.  I think it hinges on what is meant by "respect".  I am free to disrespect a religion, or not, on my own.  I'm generally free to make that notion known broadly, in the US, but it avails me little or nothing or even negative reactions.  I don't "respect" Islam, I try and understand a bit about it in its various incantations.  I'm not going to "disrespect" an individual Muslim with it.  It seems ... disrespectful of another human being.

I'm obviously not a Muslim.  I do think evidence shows the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful folks.  Some are obviously not.

Religions get a free pass or are exceptions when it comes to respect.

Why?

The thing that lacks evidence can't be criticized?  WTF sense does that make?!?

It's all so stupid, all of it.

I make an effort to respect the beliefs of others, to a large extent.  If they get completely goofy, I lose respect for the individual (usually), but I keep it to myself, and tend to avoid them in the future.  I'm not prone to running around "disrespecting" individuals because of their beliefs I may not share.

I personally don't sense any inability to disrespect some religion in my own life, I just don't waste time doing it.  And I think others are free to criticize religions any time they feel the desire to do so, in the US anyway.  I don't see much point to it, but to each his own.

I'd be in the same boat, except that lawmakers acknowledge they allow their religious beliefs to influence their policy decisions.
Fuck that noise.

The world will be better when faith is recognized as what people use when they lack a good reason to believe something.
That's religion.
It'd be great if they kept it to themselves, but they don't (by and large).  The bible says to pray in private, but I go to a Tennessee home game and you've got 100,000+ being led in a pre-game prayer.

Absurdity.

In my personal life, people keep their religious views to themselves.

I view much of what politicians say as posturing.  I don’t let it bother me.

As for respect, I give that to individuals, or not.

Agreed, respect people by default....until they give you reason not to.

Love to meet you someday.  But I am afraid I would struggle to understand a word you said.
