My point is a gun left at the scene of the crime is unlikely to be traceable for obvious reasons.

And if somehow they trace it to the listed owner, it's a bit of evidence, but not nearly enough.

I now remember that one of mine cannot be traced to me. I got it from my son. Not sure where he got it - probably from a show in Wisconsin.

It is likely he bought it at a gun show from an FFL.  About 2/3rds of gun show vendors are FFLs, usually.  Another portion sells accessories, not guns, and most of the rest trade in antique guns, which don't require the FFL.

One of mine I bought from a friend, I don't even recall his name.

A gun that was used to kill 2 Burnsville cops and a firefighter was traced back to the girlfriend of the perp, who is now facing federal straw buyer charges. Dakota County is also looking into potential accessory before the fact charges.

Sure, it happens, but it's rare.  The girl friend is in trouble, and hopefully they have enough evidence on the perp to charge him.

She may claim he took it from her, she didn't know about it.

Burnsville shooting: Minnesota mourns after 2 police officers, 1 firefighter killed | AP News

If that is the case in point, the gun registration number was not relevant to the investigation.

He left it at the scene? I guess anyone dumb enough to kill two cops is dumb enough to do that too.

No, he committed suicide apparently, or so it is reported.  The registration number on the firearm is not material.  It was a domestic dispute.  After negotiations, the perp opened first and killed three men, and then himself.

BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said Sunday that Burnsville police were called to the home around 1:50 a.m. Sunday about a “domestic situation where a man was reported to be armed and barricaded with family members in the home.” That included seven children ages 2 to 15 years. Evans declined to say which resident called. Arriving officers “spent quite a bit of time” negotiating with Gooden, he said.

At some point — he declined to specify when — Gooden opened fire, killing the two officers and the firefighter. Another officer, Sgt. Adam Medlicott, survived with injuries that were not life-threatening. He was released from a hospital and was recovering at home Monday, the city said.

All of mine are legit, but only some can be traced back to me as the people that originally purchased them are deceased. I do have a few that I bought from an FFL that could be traced to me.
Yeah that's why I say all of mine are legit, and none can be traced to me.  They're all given to me by relatives who are deceased.

Although I'm considering buying a new handgun that would put me "on the record."

My only gun was owned by my grandfather (don't know how he got it) then my father and now me.  Unless it was registered by my grandfather, couldn't be traced to me.  And even with that, no way to know who received the gun after my grandfather died (fair number of options)
