There are at least 25 locations in and around Charlotte alone.
Ooo. Now we've hit on a subject I'm much more interested in than voter ID, good and bad DMVs and getting to them.
Let's put a 30-mile radius, there are nine places where I can get a license (the map you're looking at might be pretty generous and NC has different offices for licence plates, so it doubles the numbers).
Let's take where I am at the exact moment, a gentrifying neighborhood a semi-short drive from downtown. The closest DMV is an hour away via public transit. The next appointment I can get is Feb 21, and I'll have to take the only slot availible. The next option is 1:40 away and I can get an appointment on Feb 23. From what I've been told, those "appointments" are more suggestions. The first time I tried to go, I got there at 2:30 (I had an appointment that I misread) and the lady popped out and asked who all had been there since 7 am. Several people raised hands.
All told, if you don't own a car, you'll be lucky to not sink a full day into it, possibly two.
It's interesting because as an adult, I've mostly been in states that have shockingly good DMVs. Miss that. I have a good workaround here, but it involves taking advantage of a very flexible job and driving out into the country.
