colleges have financial advisors for students

this could easily be put in place as to spending more than "X" amount is not a good idear for "Z" degree

but, colleges like to print degrees as students print money

You mean departments of financial aid?

I could actually go along with student loan forgiveness if done in a thoughtful manner that might help a bad situation

such as.......... there seems to be a problem with a teacher shortage in our grade schools and high schools.
how about, if you are employed as a teacher or immediately take the job and keep it for at least a year, $10K of your student loan will be forgiven

I haven't read up on how this is being done.  Perhaps it is very well thought out and I simply need to educate myself, because the media isn't going to help in that regard.

That's what the PSLF program is for. 10 years of work in either the public sector or at nonprofits, and so long as you've made your payments whatever is left over is written off at the end of that. It's how my wife is paying off her masters, and it's how lawyers can afford to work for the government.

perhaps student loans have changed - probably
but mine were set on the 10 year payback after you graduated
so, yes additional loans for your masters and doctorate might be good or if you could somehow extend the original loans w/o penalty

I've always thought it would be fun to teach something like engineering physics.  It just doesn't pay enough.

When my i s c & a aggie wife was preparing to go to PT school, she lacked a couple of prerequisites and had to take them at the local CC.  I tutored her through both Chemistry and Physics, and not only did she do extremely well, but she really liked both subjects, and especially physics.  She thinks I'm a natural teacher.
