Walleye is very good eats.

We caught a lot of yellowtail snapper on Saturday, so that was a good meal Saturday night.
Love walleye.

Y'all get amberjack in your part of the state?  That's also some good eatin'.

Walleye is indeed good eating.

Question for those more familiar with cooking ocean fish: is the meat of saltwater fish naturally quite salty, or did I just get a cook that was overzealous with the salt shaker? Last winter, when I was at Marco Island for a wedding, I had a grouper sandwich. It was tasty, but it was really salty.

I once was using up leftovers to make a kind of stew, I had some chunks of steak, leftover spaghetti sauce, and corn.  I mixed it all up with some more diced tomatoes and a bit of chili powder.  I really liked what the corn brought to it.

in completely "other" news................

PORT CLINTON - Even as fishing in the “Walleye Capital of World” has certainly been living up to its name over the past two years, experts are projecting it could be on the verge of getting even better.

That capital, of course, is none other than Lake Erie, or even more specifically, its western basin, where the walleye population is reaching what scientists have described as “unprecedented” heights and is leading to incredible catch rates for anglers.

“Walleye fishing has never been better,” said Travis Hartman, a biologist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife, about western Lake Erie.

Trawl surveys in western Lake Erie have documented enormous walleye hatches in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Although 2020 is the smallest of those four examples, it is still considered another great hatch.

“Prior to 2015, I’d have been doing jumping jacks over our catches this year for young-of-year walleyes,” Hartman said. “We are in an incredible period of production.”

I remember in the 70s the Walleye were almost non-existent. Most people thought they would never come back.

Family had a boat at Port Clinton, Pretty much all you could catch was Perch and Small Mouth

of course corn is readily available in this region

many yankees put corn in almost everything, even in chili.

it's actually quite good in chili (soup)

Really getting annoyed with some of the streaming TV options now.

We all know how to DVR and time-shift content. If you have a DVR in your house and you start recording a game that starts at 1 PM, for example, but you can't get to it until 1:45, it's no problem. You just go and start the recording from the beginning at 1:45. Oh, and you can fast forward through commercials and catch up.

Not so much with streaming / cloud DVR.

  • First difference is that fast forwarding through commercials is no longer a given. In order to secure the streaming rights to have a cloud DVR at all, they are at the mercy of the content providers and some don't allow fast-forwarding through commercials and others (Hulu) require you to have an "enhanced DVR" subscription that's an additional $10/month. But hey, I'm okay with that. Commercials give me an opportunity to hit the restroom or grab a beer.
  • Second, and more annoying, is that apparently some of the content providers are now putting a restriction that you can't *start* your recorded content from the beginning until the entire broadcast is completed. So if you want to pick up your football game at 1:45 PM, you can only watch live content from 1:45 PM on at that point. If you want to watch the content starting at 1:00 PM, you have to wait until the entire game is over to start the broadcast from the beginning. That's f'ing ridiculous.

I'm sure they think this will get people back to cable. Instead I'm more likely to just give up on sports fandom. Being a Purdue fan is soul-crushing enough without additional hurdles.

Most every fried fish in the south is going to be salty in my experience.  Not in a bad way, but salty.

That has not been my experience here. Granted, I don't normally order my fish fried. I like it seared and served.

I don't like much salt in food, I often request lower salt when dining out.  I can't recall having fried fish at a beach restaurant that I thought was salty.

They don't eat corn in France.  They don't eat grits either.

Walleye! Best eating fresh water fish on the planet bar none! Especially if you can go into Canada and get some from those cold deep clear lakes.

My favorite ocean fish is now cobia.
