I have my old receiver in my office with some small speakers I hooked up with very thin cables, I didn't have anything else, and I don't listen to much here.  They work.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Your ears are too old to hear it anyway...

What’s The Worst Car Myth? (jalopnik.com)

Speaking of myths, the only one they offer is changing your oil every 3,000, which is a myth with modern cars, I agree.

I was pretty into stereo stuff in high school.  I built up my system through timely pawn shop acquisitions, as well as some creative "borrowing" from my dad, when he stopped using his own equipment. When I went off to college I replaced it all with newer flashier stuff that was lower in quality, and didn't last, but over the past few years I unearthed all of it that was still in my parents' guest bedroom closet.

I still have my newish home theater system driving the audio for the TV, plus all streaming music.

But separately, in my "parlor" I have set up my old Technics stereo amplifier/receiver (which seems to be considered "decent" by modern audiophiles that are trying to replicate vintage systems), some pretty basic Boston Acoustics floor speakers, and a super nice Garrard turntable that's actually my dad's but shhhh don't tell him.  I also have a TEAC equalizer with the cool bouncy LEDs but honestly those really don't help the signal, and typically make it worse.  And then there's my Sony dual tape deck.  It still works,  but I only have a couple of cassette tapes anymore.  Most of them died in my car in the Texas heat, over the years.

And of course, lamp cord speaker wire to connect it all up. :)

Edit: OH, and my original single-disc Sony CD player, too.  Still works great.  I probably went through 2 or 3 multi-disc changers in the ensuing years that all flaked out and died.

When we were trying to be "audiophiles", most of us were relatively poor doing the best we could.

One of the biggest to me is that higher octane gasoline is "better" for your car than what the owner's manual recommends.

Oh yeah, that's a common one indeed.

That was one of my pet peeves. We live in a rural area were a majority of the time, we are driving at highway speeds. That means that the engine is using less revolutions to travel a mile than one that is driven in city conditions where the speeds are slower and a lot of time is spent not moving with the engine still running.

As such, when the standard recommendation was a 3,000 mile oil change, I was changing my oil at about 5,000 - 6,000 miles depending on how broke down the oil appeared to be. This also coincided with tire rotations.

Now our vehicles give a Percentage of Oil life remaining and seems to work out to around 7,000 - 8,000 miles. This is perfect for me as I will change the oil and rotate tires at the same time. Just did the wife's car this past weekend.

When I got out of college and started working for a living, I bought an Onkyo receiver with some Boston Acoustic bookshelf speakers and a Yamaha turntable. (I still have them in a closet).

After some time, I replaced the Onkyo receiver with a Yamaha receiver, added a Denon CD player and a Nakamichi tape deck. I replace the book shelf speakers with Infinity Reference standards and all was good. Until someone broke into the house and stole the speakers. It appears that they attempted to take the receiver but it had so many connections that they left it hanging from the rack.

I replaced the Infinities with Boston Acoustic 2 way floor speakers and a pair of Boston Acoustic outdoor speakers for the deck. Now I rarely even turn it on. But I did add a blue tooth input so that we can turn it on and stream music from our phones, so that is a nice little luxury.

When I use the home theater system, it's for watching movies, sports, or playing music for parties inside/outside (I have a second amp that drives all of the outdoor speakers around the pool, fire pit, etc.).

When I'm using my "hifi" system, it's always in an "audiophile" setting. I'm playing one of my my hundreds of vinyl LP albums from the past, or some of the new stuff that I've bought, remastered pressed on 180g vinyl.

All of that's a little hoity toity, but it's also fun.  I'd forgotten how enjoyable it is to just sit and listen through an entire record album, side a and b.

Now, most of my music listening is through my phone and mainly when I am mowing grass. For that I have a pair of Walker Razor electronic ear muffs that I use when shooting guns. I have a Blue Tooth adapter that I plug into the ear muffs and then stream music from my phone.

On my phone I have many hours of music that can play through an app. I also have SirusXM radio app and the Amazon Prime music app that I can run and listen to music that way. While mowing the lawn, I simply plug in the Blue Tooth adaptor, connect to the phone and start one of the apps and listen to music while I mow.

Many times, I simply play an entire album front to back as that is about the time it takes to mow the lawn. The last one I listened to was Pink Floyd's Animals album. I could listen to that album all day.

I think most folks are the same, the value of a real "hifi" sound system today for most of us is minimal, aside perhaps from movies.  I do listen on rare occasion, but it's a lot less often than when I was younger.  It seems like a waste of time in a sense.

Not that I don't waste time.

Interesting.

I had a 2003 that said 5,000. Then I had a mechanic who said that was to keep down some number and make it look less expensive. Then the car started burning off oil, so I got better at checking it myself.

The car eventually died because the check engine light came on during a road trip (to Ohio). I took a gamble and guessed it could be dealt with after I got back. Almost all the way home, the engine started making an awful noise and just ate it. Turned out, all the oil was gone. Thing was toast.

I use synthetic and the oil change light comes on about every ten months, we don't drive much.  City driving used to be terrible for oil before we had FI engines because the carbs would go rich every time you took your foot off the gas.

WalletHub's Happiest States 2021

I don't think you can trust it though... They don't have Florida as #1 and the other 49 shitholes in a 49-way tie for 50th.

(I know the 49-way tie would be for 2nd, but shitholes can't be tied for 2nd. Artistic license.)
