Do we think "hormone free" is a thing?

My step son always bought "cage free eggs", so when he lived with us I did that as well.  I read up on what it means, basically nothing at all, not a thing, a complete marketing ploy.  Hypoallergenic is the same, really worse, it has no defined meaning, you can slap it on anything.  "Not tested on animals" is similarly absurd, it means the product was not tested on animals, of course every ingredient in the product was at some time or other unless it's GRAS.

"Organic" of course is hugely popular, now, and has a defined meaning, but I think in many cases it doean's mean much of anything.  They don't label stuff "pesticide free" because technically nobody could.

I see "organic beef" advertised on the webz, I have no clue what that means.  Is there inorganic beef?

Heh, here comes the egg lobby. For real this time. These terms go through god knows how much negotiation so they can be slapped on a carton of eggs. There is a lot of friction between what the people want - chickens that don't live in terrible conditions, chickens that run around eating bugs and stuff like the good lord intended, verses the other thing people want, which is cheap eggs. Terms like cage free are an endeavor where companies can try to maximize both, and in effect just defines just how terrible the chickens can live v. how cheaply the eggs can be manufactured.

Most of the terms on items in the store are trumped up marketing claims meaning nothing.

Some have specific definitions but most don't, and the specific definitions can have a lot of leeway.

One interesting ad from yore was technically sound, "Whiter than white".  That one surprised me when I learned what it meant.  There actually is "whiter than white" in human perception, it is a noticeable factor.

not sure about USDA definitions, but this guy Never administered antibiotics or growth hormones to this beef.

I've known him since grade school.  He's not just trying to earn a label.

Cattle are not free range or grass fed.

Yes, advertisers are basically well-paid to deceive the masses.
All they have to do is use generally-positive wording that isn't measurable or falsifiable...but also more than that.  Using little words like "may" instead of "will," or "up to," etc.
.
It's all garbage that works on us.  It's unethical and yet it's a 200-year old industry.

The people who raise the chickens are shat on just as badly as the chickens themselves.  It's a disgusting, broken industry, but when you cite the egg lobby, you're laughed at.
.
People don't care, as long as they get what they want for a cheap price.  We're basic.

I worked for a company that was led by marketers, I rubbed shoulders with them often as not.  I was even offered a job in marketing once, which is a long story, turned it down.  They were mostly a sharp bunch, MBAs from Harvard, Stanford, places like that.  And if they didn't get promoted in 4 years, they'd leave, it was up or out.  I had one friend I kept up with who left companies after 4-5 years for another promotion, he ended up at a high level at some well known company and finally settled, I think.

Even we pencil necks had marketing training, which I found quite interesting.  Every CEO was from marketing, never an exception to that.

Perhaps OAM can pick it up on the way home
Suburbia:Where they tear out the trees & then name streets after them.
