That fiasco on Miami Beach is going to have a much higher body count than 4 when it's over. What a mess.

The investigation will probably last months, if not longer. Need to look at the remaining structure for clues as to how part of it just sheered off. I've never seen anything like this before.

Some professor down there is saying that the building has been sinking for years.

NOW he tells us.

Geesh, can you imagine a 12 story building "sinking for years" and not having someone make a deal of it?  Maybe it was sinking an inch or two and no big deal?

If the building where I live started sinking, I'd be out, it would be condemned, rightly so.

If it was noticably sinking for years, then the collapse origins are probably just that.

Day off. First time boarding the dog. My wife and I are doing our first hotel visit in over a year. Just a little overnight getaway to San Diego.

I remember hearing of a tall, residential building San Francisco that has been sinking for years. The tenants were trying to recover their investments but were not having any luck.

If the building was settling at 2mm/year since the early 90s, that's 2 1/2". Also, the videos seem to show it started at the bottom. If it had started at the top, it would have pancaked the floors before it.

Yup, the Millenium Tower: https://www.sfgate.com/news/editorspicks/article/SF-s-sinking-Millenium-Tower-to-finally-get-fixed-15439863.php#

Much of downtown San Francisco is built on sludge that is effectively landfill. Foundations are always pretty interesting, especially so as it's in a severe earthquake zone.

All kinds of litigation coming out of that one.

And if you follow that link, you'll see that it's very close to the Sales Force Tower, the tallest building in the city, and newer than the Millenium Tower. All of these new buildings are hyper sensitive to the foundation issues, even more so following the Millenium Tower debacle.

I'm not a civil engineer (graduate) as you know, so my background in structures is far less than yours.

Since it started at the bottom, does that tell you that the sinking could be the root cause for this?

I see the correlation in your posts. It would take a civil engineer to build that hamburger lol
