Long ago, I'd spend weekends, parts thereof, working on my cars, if the weather was decent, changing oil, plugs, points, condenser, filters, tires, random checks.

Cars back then needed a LOT more work than they do today, and I was poor.

I never had "director" in my title though, I had "manager" for a while, which is odd because I wasn't.  I'm sure I've mentioned how little I did in a day my last few years "working".  There wasn't much for me to do even had I been assiduous about it.  And they replaced me with TWO people.
Completely understand that, I was lucky my grandfather was a mechanic.  Got my parts cheaper than retail, but I had to do the work myself.  He would stand over me, help me diagnose and give me guidance. Believe me it helped when I was poor.  Now, between not knowing what I doing with all the new fangled technology and having the money to pay for it, won't even consider doing it myself.

Cars today take little maintenance, just change your oil, and they usually have an oil indicator to tell you when.  The GTI uses synthetic, which is great stuff and lasts about a year.  Tires usually don't lose pressure.  You'll have some air filters to consider every so often.

I once saw a guy at a filling station charge the lady next to me $5 to change her air filter.  He had to much around to make it seem like a big deal.

She had a Caddy, this was 1970ish.

I would fairly often meet folks from smaller companies who had VP of somesuch on their business card, to find out later they had zero or one report total.

Title inflation.

When I first joined the company, a Director supervised a Division of 400-500 people.  When I left, divisions would be 50-100 people.  So, they replicated the position so as to reward folks.  The Director position was reduced to being an Associate Director in effect.

I've been working really hard to "suffer" title deflation.

I had on point where I had one report, though I didn't have a title that grand. Basically, I worked my ass off and did a pretty good job, but you couldn't raise up my salary as an individual contributor, so they needed to give me a management role. (And now I have another management role in a new field that is more true management, but with a very small team. I think that happened because I asked for better money and to give it, they needed that role)

I wonder if it's a case of salaries shifting away from non-managers. I joked with someone that I wish I'd gotten into a more specialized field, where I could be a higher paid IC, but life isn't like that. Since we have so many engineers and STEM folks, am I right that you can get by as an IC, or is there always some pressure to move up to management to be more financially stable?

My last boss was an associate director and desparate to become a director.  I'm told he's still there, he's about my age.  He replaced me with two people simply to try and pump up his numbers.  The good news is his office was in another building so I rarely saw him.

He did give me a raise every January like clockwork.  He was an OK guy I suppose, just a bit weird.  He got annoyed that I wouldn't invite the other folks in his department to my retirement party, I had to invite him as the company was paying for it.  I asked him not to make a speech, but he claimed he had to, so I asked him to keep it short.

We had it at the wine bar I frequented, and I had a nice bottle of Italian wine added to the tab for me to enjoy the next day, alone.  Brunello di Montalcino, some really good stuff.  I spotted some Kirkland Brunello once and bought 6 bottles, man was that good stuff.  They were sold out when I went back, I would have bought them out.  If you want a really good Italian wine that has, well, muscles, try Brunello.  It's from Tuscany, really a kind of Chianti.

The other Italian red of note sound similar, Barolo, but isn't.  It's also very good, usually, and has a twin called Barbaresco.  And then there is Montepulciano which sounds similar and isn't, it's a lighter wine, still good, but not great.

Individual contributor.

It's apparently a tech word for non-manager.

Never heard of it.

We have a lot of those making a lot of money every-other-Friday.

We need more of those. Can't find those.

Everybody needs ICs.  You can only have so many managers, not doing any real work but still taking salary... :)
