I opined where I worked a lot of people wanted a title so much they would take a pay cut to get it.

Yup. At the Bank there was never a $ incentive or promotional feature to the title.   That's why we all played Oprah 'you're a VP, you're a VP, everybody's a VP.  '

I would fairly often meet folks from smaller companies who had VP of somesuch on their business card, to find out later they had zero or one report total.

Title inflation.

When I first joined the company, a Director supervised a Division of 400-500 people.  When I left, divisions would be 50-100 people.  So, they replicated the position so as to reward folks.  The Director position was reduced to being an Associate Director in effect.

I had on point where I had one report, though I didn't have a title that grand. Basically, I worked my ass off and did a pretty good job, but you couldn't raise up my salary as an individual contributor, so they needed to give me a management role. (And now I have another management role in a new field that is more true management, but with a very small team. I think that happened because I asked for better money and to give it, they needed that role)

I wonder if it's a case of salaries shifting away from non-managers. I joked with someone that I wish I'd gotten into a more specialized field, where I could be a higher paid IC, but life isn't like that. Since we have so many engineers and STEM folks, am I right that you can get by as an IC, or is there always some pressure to move up to management to be more financially stable?

My HVAC problem was "simple", and finally solved.  There is a plastic tray that collected condensate on the outside of the coils to keep drippage from getting on electronics.  The hole in the tray clogged up, and it wasn't draining.  A sensor would tell the compressor to turn off.  Open the hole, replace the sensor, problem solved.

It's not easy to spot the hole in the tray, the unit is inside a closet, it's a water sourced heat pump.

The sensor, about the size of a dime, cost $170.

I have a monster of a cnc machine I stumbled across coming in this week.  My abilities/capabilities to make things AND my capacity just exploded.... I made a deal with the devil to bring it together- im still charging for the products they're purchasing, but it will be discounted for them.  It's still not a bad gig by any stretch.... and, it'll keep me busy during lulls.

Custom carved entry doors.  Custom carved gates... Custom panels.  Custom trim, banisters,  window frames et al.

Those solid wood and carved entry doors can sell anywhere from $10k to $30k a set.  Custom gates? You'll need to sit down for that one....

The kinda flattering thing is- they could have bought the machinery and tools to do it themselves,  but they didn't have the skillset to operate it without a heavy salary requirement. So instead of buying the worker and bringing him to the equipment, they brought the equipment to the worker.  I just accepted two massive jobs outside of the agreement, and the machine won't even deliver until later this week.

I'm gonna be freakin busy... and that is a dang good thing. I like busy.

My apologies to @MrNubbz -- I didn't take pictures of the finished product of the brisket yesterday...

I ended up wrapping in foil at the stall, as I've tried to go "purist" with brisket too many times only to not end up with a product as moist as I'd like, and with bark that is about as hard to chew through as, well, bark. This solved both problems.

Someday I may try the butcher paper version which I understand is in between, but from now on I think I'm going to be wrapping briskets.

I would like a smallish block with my son's ribbons and perhaps rank on it, if that is doable.  Maybe 6" x 3" or so.

His unit got a Navy Unit Commendation medal 15 years later.  He was awarded a CAR on his 19th birthday.

The cutting boards were superb.  I'm not sure what my kids did with them, I need to get photos.

I can do that and it'll be my pleasure.  Do you by chance have a list of all his awards? I think you'll really like what I have in mind.

I just made this for a member here... this was actually partially done now that I see the pics.  The final product was more subdued and more accent on the details of the seal.

I'll have to get a photo of his shadow box from my daughter, who has it, somewhere.

Obviously, most of the ribbons are the "I was there" category, and the ND ribbon they get after boot.

One of my best friends is a gorgeous young lady who calls me up one day, with a tire issue.
I drive halfway across town and pull in beside her at the gas station.  And then I laugh.
I point to the sign NEXT DOOR:  Tire Shop
.
I said she is gorgeous, not with-it.  I'm glad she called me, though.
When I was in college I had class with this chick who had just transferred from Marshall for what I later found out were some boyfriend/family issues.  Anyway, she is new to campus and doesn’t know anyone. We sat beside each other and started striking up conversations and sort of became friends. But never hung out outside of class or anything.  One Friday afternoon I get a call from her saying she has a flat tire and hated to bother me but didn’t know anyone else to call blah, blah, blah.

I go over and change her tire and then ride with her to a local shop to get a new one.  I guess she had relayed all this information to her dad so he tells her to tell me thank you for helping her and to buy me dinner to show his gratitude.  So, we go to dinner, have a few drinks, and then the night ends in a way I’m sure would have lessened his gratitude toward me a great deal.

Moral of the story? Teach your daughters to change their own tires.

I think it's becoming proven in an era when everyone runs negative, that the less of record you have for anyone to hold against you, the better.
