I don't think the idea was controversial, just the "how."
But that's been the point all along.  These are expensive goods with well-paid high-tech jobs underlying.  That was always the "how."

Nobody ever thought that Nike sweatshops were going to get moved to the USA.  Only idiots with no clue pushed the idea that the only possible outcome was that the "bad" manufacturing jobs were coming back to the US and "why would we want them?"

I'm not sure I'm following you, but when I say the "how," I mean how, specifically, did we get those jobs back.  One of the reasons they didn't come here, at least it seems, is that people weren't sure how to achieve it.  We weren't playing tariff wars because of the downside, we weren't getting anywhere with renegotiating trade deals (because I don't think we were trying), so we just kinda did nothing.

If it was obvious how to get these jobs back long ago, then I missed it and the specifics you advocated for as well.  I'm actually still not sure how it's happening.  We have tariffs, we don't have tariffs.  We have them again, maybe, well, nvm, check back in 90 days.  I don't actually have a clue why things are moving and shaking now.

Semiconductors, super computers, wafer fab equipment-- all are ideal targets for repatriation and/or increased American manufacturing by foreign companies.

Seems like someone around here might have suggested such over the past couple weeks, months, years...

Nobody in the previous administration appears to have thought of it

Dont worry Its happening and will get much bigger.  Over 70 countries are scheduling negotions to make it happen.  Theres no way China will continue to hold out. They are just waiting to see if our tariff approach will get sufficient attention.  Trump is a deal maker and hes very good at it.

The cost/pain of moving those jobs to (or back to) the USA is now less than the pain of leaving them elsewhere.  It could be from tariffs, or from supply chain concerns, or from concerns with the corruption of the CCP, or other issues.  In the linked article NVidia's president makes a statement about their reasoning, and a move this big must have been in the works for many months or even years, but the potential for tariffs and/or general pain and discomfort in the trade relationships with other countries, is most certainly a factor.

I know of a very large company that is moving all of their production for certain LOBs out of China, regardless of what happens with the on-again/off-again Trump tariffs.  The move has been in the works for years, but the tariff situation is hastening it.  That company's very large domestic competitor will have no choice but to do the same if it wants to compete in the USA market.

Blame him or praise him, like him or hate him, Trump is getting what he wants.

Not true, although the Biden Administration appeared to try the carrot more than the stick.
Biden's administration provided ~$50B in funding to increase semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., and got TMSC to commit to $65B to build semiconductors in the U.S. Biden also imposed steeper tarrifs on Chinese semiconductors than previously existed.
Which policy is better is open for debate, but the Biden Administration absolutely targeted chip making for more manufacturing in the U.S.

For sure.  The two very large American computer and peripheral makers I've mentioned, buy chips, they don't make them.

LONDON (AP) — The U.K. Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that a woman is someone born biologically female, excluding transgender people from the legal definition in a long-running dispute between a feminist group and the Scottish government.

Several women’s groups that supported the appeal celebrated outside court and hailed it as a major victory in their effort to protect spaces designated for women.

“Everyone knows what sex is and you can’t change it,” said Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, which brought the case. “It’s common sense, basic common sense and the fact that we have been down a rabbit hole where people have tried to deny science and to deny reality and hopefully this will now see us back to, back to reality.”

The ruling brings some clarity in the U.K. to a contentious issue that has also roiled politics in other parts of the world as women, parents, LGBTQ+ groups, lawmakers and athletes have debated gender identity rights.

The chart is messy but it doesn't appear to track any country's original tariffs versus the US.

And it's not really possible to quantify other countries' non-tariff anti-competitive behaviors, but that's mostly what's driving Trump's retaliation.

As I've stated before, I'm against pretty much all tariffs.  They restrict the free market and I don't like things that restrict the free market.

But that means I'm against the numerous tariffs and other anti-competitive behaviors that have been waged against the USA in a one-sided trade war for the past 5-8 decades.  Especially from our "allies" in Europe and Canada.

From what I'm able to gather, the current wait-and-see will be if certain businesses re-shore to the US as hoped, or if they just ditch China and re-shore to somewhere like Vietnam or something.

The goal clearly seems to be to wall off China and make sure we have trading allies that serve our interests and not China's.  Someone opined that the best way to have done that would've been to immediately hit China and woo the countries we want to get in deeper with.  Instead what happened was unilateral tariffs were levied/threatened across the board, driving countries we want to be allies with to keep their options open, not knowing what the US might do.  They're lining up to talk to us, but they're also still keeping their channels with China open, which seems to be the opposite of Trump's goal.  It made some sense to me.  He may get where he wants to go, but I don't know that he started out in the best way.

While the stock market rebounds, the futures market remains uncertain, signaling investors still can't gauge their bets long-term.  That will inevitably break one way or the other, depending on what kind of deals get done.
