Plus I feel like the near recession was not ignored. And the economic recovery was not as well received/ignored due to high inflation.

To still defend Trump when he's invented this financial problem all on his own is.....brainwashing.  This is solely his doing.  No one asked for this or wnted this.  His voters wanted more money and a closed border.  That's literally all they wanted.  
No one wanted a trade war with allies.
No one wanted him to throw sawdust into the economy's fuel tank.  

This is what happens when you put a colossal dipshit in charge....again.  

And does anyone in the echo chamber want to address his talk of a 3rd term?  Hmm?  Doubtful.

I didn't vote for Trump in any of the past three elections, but in 2016, 2020, and 2024 his campaigns specifically focused on repatriation of American jobs and increasing manufacturing capability within the USA.  That's his intent behind these maneuvers.

It's certainly arguable whether or not these tariffs in particular or Trump's more general strategy of leveraging American bargaining power within the global macroeconomy will achieve that, but it was absolutely a campaign point for him, and it was absolutely one of the things his voters gave him the mandate to go do.

We don't have the infrastructure/raw materials to accommodate many of the jobs that would be brought back.  

He wants to bring a girl home to sleep with, but doesn't have a dick.  It's fucking stupid.

That’s an overreaction. It is absolutely fair and more than reasonable to question his economic plan, including the tariffs.   I do so myself.

But you’re sweeping generalizations about why somebody would vote for him, or more precisely vote against the opposition, leaves a lot to be desired because it leaves out several dozen reasons.  Also, the tariffs may turn out to be a disaster or they may not. It’s truly going to take six months to year before we actually know.

Yeah I just really don't understand this immediate appeal to histrionics.

Well, actually, to echo SFbadger, I do understand it.  I just find it funny.

And it'll likely take a lot more than 6 months to a year to see if it works, but we'll be able to gauge whether or not it's directionally correct by tallying the corporate announcements about moving manufacturing back, or foreign companies increasing manufacturing within the USA.

Indeed it's already happening, and I know for certain that there are other massive companies with intent to do so, that haven't announced anything yet...

Kind of how I think the novice economist should look at it.  May work, may not.  But it is bold and courageous, and not for personal gain, but for the long term correction of things we have all been bitching about for a while. 

So- when you call it a trade war- you are playing infant checkers versus the chess that is being attempted.

we could address the 3rd term, but why?  It has zero chance of happening.   similar to making Canada the 51st state , the invasion of Iceland, or the occupation of Gaza and/or many other things that Trump blabs about.

Manufacturing is not what it used to be. It's white collar.

I used to help run (VP of Development) a foundation for the JUCO I went to in Palatine, IL (before UW, of course).

Part of our mission was to get kids interested in jobs like manufacturing. It was one of many missions we had.

Those jobs command $65-75K upon graduation with an AAS degree, with little to zero student loan debt.

That's far better than some random BA from State U would get you, and the demand for employees is very high and will only get higher.
