Serious question: if someone were to make you the editor of US News and World Report for the day that it issues undergraduate college rankings, how would you rank (in order) the 18 Big Ten schools (general undergraduate education, so if you think Purdue is better for engineering, but Michigan is better for everything else, Michigan comes out on top in that scenario)? Or, if you prefer, you can keep this to the B1G 11 (i.e., before Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers, and the west coast schools showed up).

Also, if you think tiers make sense, feel free to use them.

LOL. I was going to write a bit about how so much of the USNWR rankings are BS because they overweight admissions selectivity. So the ranking of the school has less to do with the quality of the instruction as much as it's a self-perpetuating system. The highest rated schools get the best applicants, can be the most selective, and then the outcome of that selectivity (high graduation rates) keep them at the top of the rankings so they get the best applicants, etc etc.

IMHO a lot of other rankings again come back to the quality of student. Schools with more academic publications in peer-reviewed journals? Possibly because they had a better crop of students at admissions time. Lifetime earnings of graduates? Possibly because they had a better crop of students at admissions time.

I don't know of a good way to tease out the actual instruction between institutions to form a ranking as far as the quality of the education each school offers.

It's also almost entirely self-reported and there are a few schools who historically... how should I say it... flat out lie.

It's not like they have some extensive 3rd party auditing.  So if a school lies in order to game the system, well, the lie becomes part of the ranking.

All good points that I agree with, but doesn't answer the question I posed.

FWIW, US News & WR ranks them thusly:
152: Nebraska
109: Oregon
98: Iowa
73: Indiana
63: Michigan State / Penn State
54: Minnesota
46: Purdue / Washington
44: Maryland
41: Rutgers / Ohio State
39: Wisconsin
33: Illinois
27: USC
21: Michigan
15: UCLA
6: Northwestern

In my view, particularly as a west coaster, I'm surprised at Washington that low, and at Maryland, Rutgers, Ohio state, and Illinois being that high.

And I agree that it's all basically BS.

One of my majors was considered a sub “school” of another, and at times they bragged that they were ranked in the top 10 nationally.

They left out that the rankings had not been done in around a decade.

I also had to laugh because while I thought the education offered was pretty decent, it was Wisconsin name brand definitely carried more weight than it should’ve.

Oh yeah for sure.  I'm just jawin'.  I don't have enough knowledge about the majority of B1G schools to attempt any sort of ranking.

For engineering I'd say that I tend to give an extra look at graduates from Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, and Wisconsin.

And would you agree that it's probably not because of the quality of the education they received, but more of a "well if they were good enough to get into those schools, they were already a little ahead of the rest of the pack"?

15: UCLA
One of the doctors at my wife's office is starting the whole "let's plan for college applications" thing just as we are. Her kids go private, and had a seminar discussing what's important/etc for admissions.

Apparently out of that they learned that UCLA is the most-applied-to university in the nation. (Maybe there are qualifiers... Most applied to "public", or whatever... But given where they are on this list... It checks out.)

Hence if the applicant pool is that big... The admissions office can be more selective... And you get a higher graduation rate (and higher admitted applicant test scores if they use them)... Which helps you keep that ranking so lofty.

The other thing you need t o consider is where do you want to end up?  Pitt is a top 30 law school.  I didn't know Duquesne had a law school until I moved here.  But Duquesne takes care of their own.  Pitt Law attracts a ton of kids from everywhere, and I guess we have a more noteworthy diploma.  But I was planning on staying here, and every time I went into an interview with a Duquesne law diploma behind them, I knew I wasn't getting the job
