I wouldn't say 20, but more like 27-29 would be the time. Of course, you need to be on solid financial footing along the way.
That feels likely, but it apparently worked for the older generations that get venerated.

I'm sure older folks back in the day lamented these kids getting their fast cars, records and stereos. Generations remain somewhat similar at similar ages.

Interesting. Not a fan of the headline but there is some good insight here.

Companies are firing Gen Z employees soon after hiring them. What's behind their job struggles?

This isn’t particularly new I think, maybe it’s worse.

We've noticed a change over the years. Communication skill is the biggest change we see. Second would be dedication.

Communication makes sense. I wonder if the dedication change is a little more field-specific.

In a field I used to work in, I was near a zenith because the internet had made everyone contactable all the time and work super mobile. Since I was comfortable with that, I was doing work all over the place, while older employees were much more used to a slower pace, which made me roll my eyes.

I feel like we’re seeing a pendulum swing back from that in terms of work-life balance, but I wonder if engineers were already so into engineering stuff that they never really had that swing in the first place.

Work was always first. I never called out. Always showed up early and stayed late. Worked weekends.

Something clicked along the way, about 10 years ago. Definitely more balance now.

I did manage to find time to coach baseball for my boys. After the practice or game, I'd get back to work.

Did it all pay off? Monetarily, it has. Of course, I just had my chest cracked open. So, there's that.

It’s certainly a way to be. But I think there’s at least a sense that at a certain point a lot of companies started expecting that high degree of dedication without necessarily delivering a high degree of comp/the probability of advancement.

And then you are getting your chest cracked open and potentially missing moments in the lives of your family, and the nest egg isn’t nearly as big as yours.

I also wonder if there are gonna be any kind of structural changes in certain industries. I know that medicine (and law?) has particularly grueling apprenticeships. And I wonder if those end up being seen as less important down the line.

There is a shortage of medical doctors. It's noticeable here.

My primary care doctor is not one. She's a nurse practitioner. That is very common here. She works in an office where there is one MD, and 4 APRN's like her. Same with the cardiologist and vascular surgeon. One doctor and a lot of APRN's for support.

I don't know how you could reduce the residency and practice requirements though. Doctors need that additional training, and then even more for stuff like neurosurgeons and such.

(Just as engineers need that 4 years of practice before they can be licensed.)

Simple, right?

But when you're a 12 year old surrounded by people who have made nothing but poor choices, what are the odds you'll randomly start making good choices?

Work your ass off so the company's stock will rise.  Get a watch at retirement.
Worker bees.
Rat race.
TGIF.

Maybe decades of that have got people thinking maybe there's a better way.

No watch for me. Just millennials buying out my shares. 20 percent to go and I'm done.
