This isn’t particularly new I think, maybe it’s worse. 

What?

We've noticed a change over the years. Communication skill is the biggest change we see. Second would be dedication.

Communication makes sense. I wonder if the dedication change is a little more field-specific.

In a field I used to work in, I was near a zenith because the internet had made everyone contactable all the time and work super mobile. Since I was comfortable with that, I was doing work all over the place, while older employees were much more used to a slower pace, which made me roll my eyes. 

I feel like we’re seeing a pendulum swing back from that in terms of work-life balance, but I wonder if engineers were already so into engineering stuff that they never really had that swing in the first place.

Work was always first. I never called out. Always showed up early and stayed late. Worked weekends.

Something clicked along the way, about 10 years ago. Definitely more balance now.

I did manage to find time to coach baseball for my boys. After the practice or game, I'd get back to work.

Did it all pay off? Monetarily, it has. Of course, I just had my chest cracked open. So, there's that.

It’s certainly a way to be. But I think there’s at least a sense that at a certain point a lot of companies started expecting that high degree of dedication without necessarily delivering a high degree of comp/the probability of advancement.

And then you are getting your chest cracked open and potentially missing moments in the lives of your family, and the nest egg isn’t nearly as big as yours.

I also wonder if there are gonna be any kind of structural changes in certain industries. I know that medicine (and law?) has particularly grueling apprenticeships. And I wonder if those end up being seen as less important down the line.

make good choices

life is hard

much harder if you make poor choices

Simple, right?

But when you're a 12 year old surrounded by people who have made nothing but poor choices, what are the odds you'll randomly start making good choices?

Work your ass off so the company's stock will rise.  Get a watch at retirement. 
Worker bees.
Rat race.
TGIF.

Maybe decades of that have got people thinking maybe there's a better way.

No watch for me. Just millennials buying out my shares. 20 percent to go and I'm done.
