I was blessed with 20/20 my whole life, until I hit about 45 and then it started to go, as is pretty typical.  I now have a mild prescription for reading and close-up stuff, but my distant vision is still fine.

My i s c & a aggie wife on the other hand had terrible vision.  I paid for her LASIK while we were still dating, around 25 years ago, and it changed her life.  She's now suffering some normal deterioration in her vision and uses readers, but she wouldn't trade anything for the quarter-century of good vision she enjoyed after the surgery.
By the time I got around to considering LASIK, I was kinda close to the Point where it might not totally be worth it. Plus, nearly a decorative contact had left me with some dry eye issues that I didn’t really feel like exacerbating.

Such as life. I like my glasses just fine.

I move to drop the subject. I just another hot button topic for politicians and such. Most of them are not worth talking about here.

This is confusing there being any downsides with immigration with saying it's all downside. I have never said there are no downsides to immigration. It's just that overall it helps grow the economy and is generally good. Which is why draconian measures against it are often stupid and make everyone poorer. I do not want to make us all poorer, which is why I'm against your position.
OMG, progress!

So you finally concede that there are downsides!

For example:
The annual cost of illegal aliens to the US is $150.7 billion after subtracting the estimated $32 billion in taxes the illegal aliens pay.  Source:  Federation for American Immigration Reform.  Don't see any upside to illegal immigration.

It's not just the medicare, but it's also the amount of medical care they receive at zero cost to themselves and the expense that puts on the system.

And also the SS and Medicare issues which are catastrophic to those of us who are financially literate but "silly" to you.

There is also all the crime.

The second half of your post is your usual unsupported nonsense but at least you are learning something!

Seconded. :-)

And I started to have to wear reading glasses about 8-10 years ago. Now I basically can't read without them (at least not without blowing things up a great deal). I still have close to 20/20 vision at distance, but taking my reading glasses on and off to walk around the office put a lot of wear and tear on them. As a result, just this last year I switched to progressives that have returned my distance vision to where it was when I was in my 20s--better than 20/20. Getting sunglasses with the same prescription has been nice because I can now ready my phone (and other things) when I'm outside on a sunny day. I don't mind wearing glasses, although I do tire of them every day.

The thing that made me realize my distance vision had deteriorated a little (not much, TBH) was playing console video games. I realized I couldn't quite make out things I used to be able to. :-)

See, this is the issue. The "downsides" apparently include benefits they don't receive and "crime," which is much more of a problem among people born here than people who come here. Most of the arguments you have against immigration exist more in your imagination than in reality, and as I have said before, there is no arguing with someone's imagination.

I have readers I bought on Amazon. 6 for $25. I have a pair in every room of the house that I use.

I do have driving glasses for night. Distance is otherwise very good for my age.

I already demolished your crime claim.

Benefits were covered adequately by @Temp430 and @SuperMario .

So as usual you failed to respond and claimed I'm the one detached from reality.

Fortunately the bulk of the country is not so easily fooled.

My wife had her vision fixed a few years back and swears by it.  So, I'm going for it.  They do one eye at a time 2 weeks apart.

I understand I likely will need reading glasses, which oddly enough I don't use now, I take my glasses off to read.
Are you getting lens replacement?

I see, and you also demolished evolution and the laws of thermodynamics.

The statement that crime is higher among immigrants than the native population is false. It is not true. It is not supported by any data. If you squint real hard and make a lot of logical jumps, you might be able to get to the place where illegal immigrants commit violent crime at slightly higher rates, though this isn't particularly well supported.

Further, Medicare and social security are entitlement programs created by Congress. Literally tomorrow, Congress could pass a law on immigration saying that immigrants aren't entitled to these programs. They could even pass a law saying immigrants must pay taxes which help fund these programs but they aren't entitled to the benefits. It is in no way logical or sensical to say we must do everything we can to limit immigration because of these programs.

I like to trumpet immigration. It is historically unpopular, pretty much everywhere, but has undeniable benefits for societies everywhere. When a major party is making "mass deportations" its main selling point, I think it is important to make the case that immigration isn't just some charity for the third world, it is an essential part of a successful and growing economy.

If Medina and Max aren't careful, this thread is going to start discussing chili right quick.

Or something like that.

I'd rather hear yankee idiots trying to talk about bean soup, than this ongoing debate.

Iowan chili with beans was served following the 5-man scramble golf tournament Sunday afternoon

It was tasty, not real spicy.  They had 2 different recipes...... mild and spicy

I had two bowls of the "spicy"  .. I thought it was mild.

but, good and filing and warmed us up.

50 degrees and windy was a bit chilly for the front nine.

$2 tall boys of Coors light and Coors banquet were on special.

Listen we have 2700 pages of inane prattling, might as well embrace the beans and make better chili
