crazy story, Pavel Durov a Russian tech billionaire often referred to as the Russian Mark Zuckerberg arrested in France today after his private jet landed. France is arresting him because: he won't censor and turn over his telegram app to them to let them control and censor it.
Durov started two highly successful social media companies/apps. First he founded VK (comparable to a "Facebook of Russia" apparently) which became extremely successful in Russia and made Durov incredibly wealthy. The Russian government was trying to force him to censor people on the app in 2014, and he very publicly refused to do so. The Russian government was pressuring the company to hand over the personal data of users to Russia's security agencies and to block political opposition leader Alexei Navalny's page on VK. Durov refused, the company forced him out and the Russian government forced him to sell the company and threatened him with prison- and he fled Russia for Saint Kitts and Nevis and then later Dubai.
He also founded Telegram with his brother, a social/media chat app very similar to WhatsApp, with end to end encryption, which became very popular and made him even more wealthy. In 2018 the Russian government banned Telegram from Russia because the company refused to cooperate with state security services. Russia later lifted the ban in 2020 after Telegram agreed to "counter terrorism and extremism" on the platform. I.e. censor.
The guy was just arrested today in France as soon as he stepped off the steps of his private jet by French military forces due to an arrest warrant issued by the French National Judicial Police and faces up to 20 years in a French prison and is accused of "not taking any action in his Telegram app, where serious crimes, including drug trafficking, crimes against children, and fraud, occur frequently." Not censoring.
France is no better than Russia when it comes to freedom of speech & expression. Fuck these Eurotrash dickwads. Why do we pay for their security? Can we kick France out of NATO again?
