I'm a bit surprised at the number of coffee shops around us,  I don't quite "get it".  There is one that is more of a restaurant named Cafe Intermezzo styled after Vienese coffee houses, and they do a nice job.  We used to dine there a lot.  It got crowded.

But regular coffee shops like Starbucks?  You pay $3.50 for a pretty "normal" cup, over roasted in my view, but whatever.  I was saddened seeing so many SBs in Paris of all places.

Anyway, I think it's a combination of all the reasons suggested herein.  OK with me.

I bet that's not true, mostly becuase I think it undersells just how pervasive Coke is and the competition around coffee. 

That said, many Starbucks sugar bombs.

I have tried Starbucks 3-4 times over the years and absolutely hate their coffee.  I really don't get it.  I've tried different flavors, etc.  I much prefer a nice cup from Buc-ees (founded in my hometown) than anything Starbucks offers.

I think they have some decent coffee drinks, if that's your thing.  Every time I go to any sort of conference or whatever, that just has regular and decaf Starbucks in the common area, I don't get it.  It's not good, and is probably more expensive.  I really liked McDonald's coffee for a while, but they changed it.  Same with Sheetz (which I assume is comparable to Buc-ees).  But I guess it looks bad for an organization to be serving (high end) gas station/fast food coffee.  Even though I assume nobody walks into a Starbucks and just orders a black coffee.

Among those type of high end coffee chains, I will say I do really like Caribou

I recently had to meet a guy for business purposes, for coffee at a Starbucks.

I was so out of my element lol.

When it came time to order something, he ordered something with like six words in it, which I couldn’t even repeat or memorize 😂. 

It sounded like a café latte, espresso, Menti, ice cream, sundae, blah, blah blah blah   

All I could utter was “G that sounds good. I’ll have the same thing.”

Tasted like a hot milkshake.

if this happens to me, I just tell them I want a plain black coffee, strong.
Then don't seem to like it, but they also seem to understand.
