It helps if you have less regulation.

I'm not sure we even get that option. Nationally, neither party has showed much interest in loosening housing regulations. Everyone is a NIMBY at the end of the day.

Yes, one of them has. The Government is too big. Too many agencies.

Look, most of the "clean" properties are gone. What is left has issues. Floodplain, wetlands, poor soils, etc.

I've had projects where over 45 permits were required, from 25-30 agencies, at the Federal, State, County and Local levels.

And the agencies don't talk to each other. They make comments that contradict the other.

Developers can't sit on land forever through the process, so they walk and pay a premium for clean land.

Clean land costs 4-5 times more than land with issues. Do you know what that means?

The buyers pay for it. Unaffordable housing for most.

Less regulation. Vote for it.

I'd like to. But Republicans only talk about more regulation on labor. Dems trying to prove they will regulate labor even harder.

Some regulation of labor is necessary.

I don't mind OSHA, for example.

I don't mind green cards.

I do mind illegals who have no interest in becoming acclimated. Everyone should mind this.

All regulations started somewhere with some goal in mind. If "illegals" work hard and do a good job I think it is insane to try and regulate them away. In any event, not trying to start immigration debate part 5000. Building anything feels like a boondoggle, and loosening that up is a worthy goal.

It does in some cases, but the land leases don't start until the shovel hits the ground. Developers can bear the time. Most cannot bear the interest amassed over time, which wind and solar do not have. And then the subsidies...

Big difference.

Who's goal? Some unelected dickhead deadbeats in DC?

Look, the Clean Water Act (passed by Congress in 1987, Reagan signed) was and is a good thing.

But so much has been tacked on over the years by the dickhead deadbeats, it's unreal.

It reminds me of flying during Covid. The flight attendant announced that it was "Federal Law" to wear a mask. I did get up a bit later to ask her when Congress passed that "law" and when it was signed. She was confused, like so many other sheep.

Regulations are NOT laws. Regulations are made by dickhead deadbeats.

Reading the Code of Federal Regulations is like being with Alice in Wonderland.  I've seen Federal officials unable to understand parts of it.  Some parts mandate things that other parts say it illegal, in the OSHA parts (which really made no sense to me, most of it).  The "Lab Standard" was written by someone who'd never seen a real lab apparently, and may or may not have been mandatory.

My idea is to piggyback on "van life" and give homeless people a VW bus that is outfitted with a bed in the back and give them a monthly gas card (or they could be electric).
Buy abandoned lots as 'park-n-live' areas for them to have a home base.  These would have a water source and bathrooms/showers.
.
Hardy-har-har, OAM, you're nuts.  I know, it's just a crazy idea, but it does address some things.

1 - it gets them off the streets
2 - it allows them to be mobile - autonomy, hope, options
3 - provides a much cheaper, climate-controlled living quarter

They'd be able to go to job interviews.  Visit family that may be able to help.  Hell, they could go park in rural areas if they want.  If/when they get back on their feet, they have a payment plan.  Or you could say they only get it for a year.
The point is, it would seriously help out several major problems at once.  It's just an idea.
I like it. Well done, OAM.

No I'm good with what I've stated.  The working poor and temporarily unemployed find their way even if it's sad or unsavory by our standards.  But the mentally ill and addicted end up on the streets.

But the real point that some of us are refuting is this one highlighted above-- building homes isn't going to solve homelessness.  It's not even going to come close to approaching it tangentially.  It's a strange red herring that completely avoids the real issue.
Well then o suppose we’re arguing about terms. Homelessness is more broad, includes a whole bunch of things. Consistent (there’s a more accurate term I can’t place) camping is more narrow. We’re dealing with the second.

And we agree, more “houses” won’t help camping. So what to do with those folks?

Feels like a start, but one big downside is a lot of these folks probably represent a danger behind the wheel.

But the vibe is in the right place.

Folks who are currently homeless due to adverse circumstances are relatively earily helped.  They are compos mentis, in general, they simply don't have money for rent obviously.  Some live in their car now.  Shelters can help them, and do, often, so they are temporarily homeless.  They are able to get back on their feet, find a cheap apartment with help, and a job, and are no longer homeless.  Then they are replaced with another person homeless under similar circumstances.

The prolonged urban homeless are drug adicted, insane, or just prefer that lifestyle.  More housing cannot possibly help them.

There are thousands upon thousands of FEMA trailers that are sitting unused right now, in fields being rented by FEMA. These housed people after Hurricane Ian.

How about some dickhead deadbeat from HUD talks to some dickhead deadbeat at FEMA?

Yeah... right.
