If that's the case, then expect spending to go through the roof.

Nothing a Republican Congress likes more than spending money their party's President can take credit for.

I agree with this and your earlier post about gridlock.

I have a STRONGLY Libertarian friend who claims to actually calculate his vote to establish or maintain Gridlock. Seriously:
  • In a midterm he votes for Congressional Rep and Senator of the party opposite the President.
  • In a Presidential year he determines which he thinks is the most likely thing to happen then votes for the opposite party in all races. Ie, if he thinks Democratic control of the HoR is inevitable then he votes straight-ticket R to balance that off. Conversely, if he thinks the Republican will win the Presidency, he votes straight-ticket D to balance that off.

That is what I used to do until I figured who I vote for is irrelevant to any outcome.

well I vote we don't even pay the Senators and take all their pay and give it to the troops. and their illegally obtained insider traded stock portfolios as well.
This kind of thing gets kicked around a lot but it is, at best, a feel good idea that would have no impact.

I read a suggestion once that what we should actually do is to massively increase HoR and Senate pay because:
  • As a % of the budget it is so insignificant that it makes no material difference, and
  • As a practical matter, they are pretty clearly underpaid. Senators and Reps currently get $174K/yr. Members of Boards of Directors of Corporations have far less responsibility and frequently make more, often a LOT more, sometimes an order of magnitude more.
  • Reps trying to live (and commute to DC) and campaign, etc on $174k are naturally more susceptible to bribery than they would be if we paid them an order of magnitude more.

In the US, board members receive about $112,575 as of 2024, with the average salary range falling between $86,782 and $139,025. On average, the compensation for board members can be much higher, particularly those in large publicly traded companies.

Some BoD members are also employees of course.  The President may also be Chairman of the Board.  But a lot of members are quasi-honorary, their reputation looks good, they have a PhD in something or other.  They won't be paid nearly as much.

The top executives in a large company will get paid a lot typically and even more in incentive pay.

well he's kinda right. in spirit.

Trump hasn't really been a massive boon to the Republicans. That red wave never materialized in 2022 and they've tended to lose more elections than they've won since he's been in the picture.
He doesn't care about actual ideas, just nitpicking and shitting on my posts.  See Pepsi vs Dr Pepper.

Feds approve contentious Mountain Valley Pipeline (thehill.com)

The end of the years-long fight over the pipeline comes after President Biden signed a law last year requiring it to be approved as part of a deal to lift the debt ceiling.
The project has divided Democrats.
Longtime Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), who recently registered as an Independent, backed the project, which would have carried energy produced in his home state. As part of a separate deal with Manchin to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, Democratic leaders agreed to support the project.
However, progressive lawmakers opposed the build-out of additional fossil fuel infrastructure, and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) raised local concerns about the pipeline that would run through his state.
Natalie Cox, a spokesperson for Equitrans Midstream, one of the companies behind the pipeline, said in a written statement that “final preparations are underway to begin commercial operations” for the project.
Cox did not give specific details as to when the pipeline would actually begin operating.

That's actually an excellent idea. Make it worthwhile to go into public service.

I don't think "average" is the fair comparison because the US Government is obviously vastly larger than a small corporation. If you want to be closer to fair I think you'd need to compare to the largest MNC's.

One thing that strongly impacts this that I don't know is whether and to what extent Senators and Representatives get reimbursed for travel and expenses associated with maintaining a second residence in DC.

That would be a massive expense unless you happened to be from a VERY local district in Maryland or Virginia. Also, you are legally required to maintain a residence in your home State.

I don't think "BoD members" is a very good comparison. It's quite common for people to sit on boards of multiple companies. Being a member of a BoD isn't exactly a 9-5, 48 week/year job, as I understand it typically.

I think "high-level executive" is a more apt comparison, because when you start getting to C-suite executives at large companies, they're making a hell of a lot more than our elected officials.

Yes indeed. A lot of incentive pay.
