It's interesting to see the contrasting fortunes of the right wing parties.

On one hand, Macron just called a snap election for his parliament in an attempt to keep Marine Le Pen and her ilk at bay. 

Across the channel, the Tories are heading for a biblical flogging as a result of Brexit buyers remorse.

I view it more as an acknowledgement that the existing Democratic position on immigration is a millstone around the neck of Democratic electoral chances.

The thing it, it seems to be alienating a lot of "progressive" types (along with the Israeli thing), it won't budge any Trump supporters, and the folks in the middle probably don't think it means much of anything beyond a political ploy.

So, as a campaign tactic, I'd call it poor.

The "Israeli thing" is a fascinating fissure in the "progressive" coalition. 

Jewish US voters have historically been not just Democratic leaning but overwhelmingly Democratic. Where this situation will lead is anyone's guess but I think we are at a crossroads.

Without looking it up, Reagan's Amnesty was about 35 years ago so it has been a problem since well before that.

That Amnesty deal was supposed to trade Amnesty for border security but the pro-immigration side got their Amnesty and my side got screwed. If you ever want to know why my side is totally unwilling to compromise, there is your answer.

It isn't that they can't find it, the underlying issue is that the American people broadly support immigration restrictions but the donor class broadly supports cheap labor so politicians are caught between their voters and their contributors.

I think it's more complex than that, but that is one issue.
