He’s not now a Senator.
so, De Leon aspires to be president?

Yeah, it's rude to talk about shithole countries like that.

They probably think the US is a shithole country. Some of our own citizens think the same.

I'm sure @betarhoalphadelta is THRILLED with this other news.

FF posted in the weather thread, and I almost replied.

It's actually not a bad route for it, and they can follow the I-15 pretty much the whole way so most of the hard bit related to figuring out where it'll go, acquiring the land, and all that stuff is done/easy.

I don't know what it'll cost and if it'll get anywhere near the ridership numbers they need to make it work financially. My guess is that it'll have problems with that side of things, as is pretty common.

I don't think it would make sense for me to ride it. I looked it up and I can take a Metrolink from the Irvine station (close) and either route it through downtown LA (3-3.5 hrs to Rancho Cucamonga) or route it through San Bernardino (2-2.5 hrs) to get there. Given that the portion of the drive that is most horrible--especially on a Friday afternoon which would be the most likely time I'd go to Vegas--is basically from here to right past Rancho Cucamonga, a little over 2 hours of just sitting on Metrolink isn't horrible. But I don't like those options as basically either one has me making two train swaps, hauling luggage at each one, etc. I'd personally rather drive or fly. Honestly I hate Vegas anyway and might go there once every 3-4 years if there's something I want to see, so it's pretty much a moot point for me.

But for anyone who lives in the most populous corridors of LA, it's pretty much a straight Metrolink shot out to Rancho, and then hop one train to Vegas. Pretty easy.

And I'll bet the bar car will make bank on that routing :72:

PARIS (AP) — Five people, including a child, died while trying to cross the English Channel from France to the U.K., French authorities said Tuesday, just hours after the British government approved a migrant bill to deport some of those who entered the country illegally to Rwanda.

The prefecture responsible for the north of France said in a statement authorities spotted several boats, packed with migrants, off the coast of Pas-de-Calais, attempting to depart in the early morning.

Several French navy ships, including assistance and rescue tug Abeille Normandie, intervened to rescue “a very overcrowded boat carrying more than one hundred people on board,” the statement emailed to The Associated Press said.

This came only hours after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s latest effort to send some migrants to Rwanda finally won approval from Parliament. The U.K. government plans to deport some of those who enter the country illegally as a deterrent to migrants who risk their lives in leaky, inflatable boats in hopes that they will be able to claim asylum once they reach Britain.

Human rights groups have described the legislation as inhumane and cruel. Both the United Nations refugee agency and the Council of Europe called on the U.K. Tuesday to rethink its plans for fears they could damage international cooperation on tackling the global migrant crisis.

Migrants trying to cross the busy English Channel face drownings and sinking among other deadly incidents, often aboard crowded boats.

An estimated 30,000 people made the crossing in 2023, according to U.K. government figures.

The problem for me on such trips is this is listed as a 4 hour drive, I realize traffic and where you are in LA can make that much longer.  But, if I leave early, I can drive 5 hours easily enough.  At 270 miles, it would take about 8 gallons of gas in my car.  So, in California, that is probably about $40, plus wear and tear.

OK, if traffic is just plain horrible, that could alter my calculus.

But there is also convenience in having your personal car with you.

I kinda look at Brightline in Florida where traffic can be really bad also to see how they are doing.  So far, it's no better than "OK".

A new laser-based propulsion technique developed by researchers at the Harbin Engineering University in China could help the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) build silent yet superfast submarines in the future.

The technology could also power underwater missiles and torpedoes, a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report said.

The concept of underwater laser propulsion isn’t new.  Japanese researchers first considered it more than twenty years ago. In principle, the technology works fairly simply.

Lasers are used to generate plasma inside water, which is then used to make a detonation wave by plasma expansion. The detonation wave is used to propel a craft or weapon ahead.

The greatest hurdle, though, was the application. Since detonation waves spread from a single point to all directions, scientists found it impossible to get the detonation wave to generate a force in a specific direction. This meant little progress was made on this concept until the Chinese funded extensive research.

Thrust of a commercial jet engine
A research team led by Ge Yang, a professor at the School of Engineering at Harbin University, has now found a way to improve the efficiency of laser propellers using a coating of optical fibers – also referred to as underwater fiber laser-induced plasma detonation wave propulsion.

Using this approach, the researchers claim to be able to generate 70,000 newtons of thrust using just two megawatts of laser power. The thrust generated is similar to that of a commercial jet engine.

In addition to generating thrust, the laser also vaporizes the seawater close to the vessel, creating bubbles on the submarine’s surface and reducing water resistance. This phenomenon, known as supercavitation, could potentially allow submarines to travel at supersonic speeds underwater.

More importantly, since the propulsion system is not mechanized, the submarine will not generate any noise, adding to its stealth.

Research drawing US ire
To solve the problem of the detonation wave, researchers have previously proposed using working media—tiny spherical particles that travel at a high speed in one direction and, per Newton’s laws, exert an opposing force on the submarine, propelling it.

Experiments attempted using working media and a one-watt laser generated only a small fraction of thrust than expected and were ineffective as a propulsion method. However, the laser engine designed by Ge’s team improved the output by up to four orders of magnitude.

The researchers used a device that resembled a gun barrel and adjusted its shape and internal structure to minimize the energy loss associated with the use of constraining devices.

The SCMP report added that a pair of such barrels were used to bombard the working medium particles. The protruding structures inside them reduced internal friction between shock waves.

A nuclear reactor on a submarine generates 150 MW of power, which is sufficient to power such a laser propulsion system. However, researchers still need to work on other components, such as heat dissipation of optical fibers and durability of the equipment in high salinity environments, before the tech can be transferred to real-world scenarios.

When ready, the same technology could also power a range of underwater projectiles, missiles, and torpedoes.

The recurrent output of high-end research from Harbin University in naval warfare has prompted blockades and sanctions on 30,000 students and staff associated with the educational institution from the US, the SCMP report added.

Quite the shit show going on at college campuses around the country lately.

I wonder what the summer will bring? Hopefully not shades of 2020.

I think the bad stuff is at a handful of mostly NE colleges.  Like most things, it attracts more coverage than universities with no or small protests happening.  Below looks like a pretty small "mostly peaceful" march, with no impact on anything.
