My mother has an irrational phobia about onions, and refused to eat or serve anything that had onions in any capacity. 

While I don't put them on everything, there are certainly times and places for their use. It took me a long time to come around on that.

I prefer raw onions on hot dogs.

As for Hawaii, for a very long time their primary exports were beef and fresh water.
