Sounds like a fire hazard.
Probably. Though the heat comes out the top and the box is on the bottom, so hopefully we don't catch on fire.

Not from heat... From sparks.

Have it looked at, dude. Weird ticking noises from high current electrical equipment shouldn't be fixed by shoving something under it...

The saga of the electric fireplace continues. We got the new one, and it's much prettier and modern looking. Unfortunately, it also made a weird ticking noise. I realized the noise went away if I pushed on the bottom of the unit, so I wedged a box of soap under it. Not as pretty, but I'm done fooling with it.
aren't you glad you use dial?Don't you wish everyone would?

well heat rises but if you've seen sparks send it packing or at least make sure the smoke/fire alarm works

All facts. I can't really figure it out, though I don't think it's actually the motor making the noise but rather the rotating "flames."  It sounds they are brushing something as they turn.

That use to be Dial's signature slogan in commercials but a dial is an electrical/mechanical instrument

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of fake fires but it is pretty and keeps the room pleasantly warm. Not trying to build a real fireplace in our bedroom.

my daughter would probably prefer something pretty

She lives in my basement, it gets cool down there...

I bought her the best electric heater as rated by the internet a few years ago

I'm more about function and price.

She can certainly upgrade on her dime

there's no wondering why I'm single

FF,a buddy and I installed a ventless gas fireplace in the basement in 2009.Zero problems - he ran the actual gas line from the main over the ceiling and down comes on a few minutes an hour 10-15 but you can adjust as you like.Defintely removes dampness and chill

no gas at my house.  All electric

heat pump went out a week ago.  Bad reversing valve.

don't think the heat pump would help much this week with an expected high of 9 above for the next 10 days

electric furnace works great, hopefully all kilowatts from windmills, but doubtful

MidAmerican Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, owns and operates George Neal South Generating Station six miles outside of Sioux City, IA along the Missouri River. The station has a single 640 MW coal-fired unit that began operating in 1979. Coal ash from the station is disposed of in a 32-acre CCR landfill.

I can see this plant from my house.  Tomorrow morning when 9 below zero, the vapor from the smokestack will be impressive

No NG - WTF,someone has a monopoly.Heat pumps are great in the mid atlantic states and south were they can be reversed for AC puposes. In the great white north spring/fall - i have one but use for back up in case the gas furnace goes down or inturruption in service.Hopefully your unit is fixed,do you have a gas option?

my heat pump works in the summer as well

my other option would be a 500 gallon propane tank in the yard like many of my neighbors

all electric seems to work fine
