American politics is usually a game of who can act more stupid in public. If I were from another country I'd float balloons over us all the time just to see what the politicians tweet.

I would lean to not trusting some report that Chinese balloons had traversed the US "undetected".

It was shot down over US territory.  Hitting the water could make the pieces more intact than hitting land.

I sense most of the disgust over how this was handled is political.

I think it all comes down to trust in our President to do whats right for the US

just knock it out when it gets within a couple miles of US soil.

I'm guessing we knew all about this balloon long before it got over US soil, but allowed it to see what the chinese intentions were.

Biden may or may not be competent, but the US military in Alaska is probably very alert with the Chinese, North Korea,  and the Russkies.
