Gaspacho.

My wife made it a few times in summer and hers was the best I've ever tasted.

They're savory, warm, often have multiple ingredients, and eaten with a bowl & spoon.
That's a family.
Brunswick stew is also a member.  As are all stews.
As are ramens, which would be a pasta, but are broth-based.
Gumbo is in this family as well.

Wrong.

I have a pot of chili soup simmering

be ready for halftime on the Vikings/Lions game

not my usual competition chili

ground beef and pork, a can of Rotel, and a small can of beans - the unusual things

Please do not use the words chili and soup in the same sentence.

The two terms I react to are "grilling" and "barbecuing".  I had a GF once talking about "barbecuing swordfish" which left me stumped.  She was from Long Island.

Soup and that C word seem, to me anyway, more relaxed broad terms.

Smoked salmon is a thing, but I don't think I'd call it BBQ.   Cold-smoking is a little different.

I'll be making that sort of soup myself later, but no beans.

I agree smoking is not the same as barbecue.  I do like smoked salmon.  Had some in Paris that was awesome.
