If one has offers from say Bama, Ohio State, Clemson, UGA, Auburn, Florida, Texas, and the like, does Tennessee compete with that?

They likely can manage to be ranked in the teens in most years, recruitingwise.  That might get them 9-4 seasons with a good coach (not great, just gooc).

Tennessee Volunteers Football Record By Year | College Football at Sports-Reference.com (sports-reference.com)

Their last ten win season was 2007, also their last final ranking in the top 20.  Jones managed 9-4 twice in his tenure, which isn't terrible for a record those years.  At some point, the top level recruits simply don't even think of you unless they are in state, and even then.

And they are paired with Alabama each year.
They've been 12th-16th in total talent across the past four years. The downside is 2-3 very tough games a year, plus a crossover.

The plus side is they should be better than 4-5 conference teams every year, and it's not like Florida is always that far ahead.

No...not always.

I considered early playing time, and it's a consideration, but at say Bama a top tier talent is going to get PT early also, at least in blow outs and STs.  And by his second season he should be starting, or rotating.  Now, a QB is going to check who is already present for how long, but not starting your first year can be fine and then move up the second.

The key is to go wherever gives you the clearest path to the League.

There is a reason nearly all the 5 star dudes sign with a handful of programs, special cases aside.

The top ranked teams on the 247 2021 recruiting list have commits for 7, 5, 4, 3, and 2 five stars,  No one else has more than one.

Seven five stars, in one year, and no doubt some near that level.

Reports: Tennessee to part ways with Jeremy Pruitt

https://247sports.com/college/tennessee/Article/Jeremy-Pruitt-Fired-Tennessee-Vols-Football-Head-Coach-Coaching-Search-157430488/

After the way the Fanbase treated Schiano I wish them continued distress

Does anybody know the specifics of why Pruitt was fired for cause? If recruiting violations that's just the excuse to get out of the buyout. If he wins enough nobody in Knoxville cares how much is getting funneled to the Linebacker's Dad.

It's apparently "condoning" violations, or not doing enough to stop them.  The details are sparse, and I expect Pruitt's lawyer will negotiate a parting gift.

Pruitt may have problems finding a coaching job now though even as DC.

Evidently he was given an extension last summer and his buy out was 24.8(from what I've read) unless they have a morals clause
