I was working in the family restaurant by age 8, bussing tables and washing dishes.  No child labor laws appeared to apply...

Typically there are exceptions for kids working for their parents, as far as I know.

Yes there are, I was just kidding around.

They paid me in soda-fountain "suicides" as I recall. :)

That was back before every 7-11 had an open soda fountain, so having free rein on the beverages was a big deal to a kid in 1980.

When I worked as the starter on a golf course at 14, one of my perks was unlimited soda... I took advantage.

Man, I wish caddies were still a thing.

I started working at 13 as a caddie. In Illinois at the time, the earliest you could get a normal job was 14 (with a work permit from your school), but caddies could start at 13.

I was hoping that there might be opportunities for my son this summer, as he turned 13 in August so he'll be 13 for the first half of the summer this upcoming year.

I called the private country club close to his mom's house, and they don't have caddies. I finally found a course which does have caddies, but they have a caddie partnership with an external firm called CaddieNow which will only take you at age 18+.

Then I checked here in CA, and you can't work anywhere until you're at least 14.

Kid needs a damn job to learn to appreciate what it's like to actually work for and earn things.
My oldest stepson caddied at Southern Hills (site of several PGAs and US Opens) for a couple of summers.  He earned some decent coin.
Southern Hills is hosting the Sr. PGA this year, and may be the replacement for Trump's course for the 2022 PGA.

speaking of golf and the PGA in other news...

my brother and I were invited to The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio

my brother's colleagues and friend's parents live on the 9th hole of the course.  Apparently, folks that live on the course get perks, such as free passes and parking, access to the hospitality tents.  They also know Jack Nicklaus and say they will introduce me to Jack.

My brother will line up a short "talk" at OSU, so his airfare and lodging will be comped.  All I need to do is get there.  12 hour drive or a flight.

So, I will be in C-bus a few days the first week of June.

Looking forward to it.

I didn't have a first "job" until I was 18. Granted, the first job was a doozy and a very good growing experience.

I delivered papers at 12-13.  Mowed lawns of course.   One guy, an immigrant from the Netherlands,  Krommenhoef.  He wouldn't let me mow on the sabbath and had me use his manual push mower.   The guy also wore wood shoes and puffed some exotic looking pipe, long wispy beard as he examined my passes.  No wonder I had such strong triceps as a kid.

A few houses down was Mr. Rambo (seriously). Total opposite.   Some kind of machinist.   Let me use his big rider, always had metal on the radio in garage.  Kids in neighborhood always wondered what kind of firearms he owned.   In winter as we'd play hockey on the pond across the street He'd come out to see what the problem was when we'd eventually start arguing or fighting about something.   Neighborhoods thrive when you have enigmas like that.   His name was Rambo, in the early mid 80s!   We wouldn't dare cut through his yard, heck I'd be pissed too, I cut that sucker.

I had a Christmas job in 1972 at JC Penny selling bikes.  I earned MW $2.60 an hour and was glad of it.  A recession hit the next year and they didn't hire temps like me.

My next job was graduate assistant, which paid around $5,000 a year, yay.  My next job I had until I retired.

are you planning to run for office?
I was actually asked to run for congress almost 30 years ago by a group of people.  As much as I would have loved to do it, too much time spent fundraising and didn't want the anal exam by the press, opponent, etc.

As to keeping the disk, I am a pack rat.

I had a couple of paper routes, the morning paper and the evening paper.

Also worked most summer on a farm.

Why not Jack can afford the counseling that would naturally follow
