I like this list.

But, it's just a subjective list

https://247sports.com/LongFormArticle/College-football-best-players-all-time-Herschel-Walker-Bo-Jackson-Barry-Sanders-Archie-Griffin-158871761/#158871761_7

oddly, the list doesn't include Archie's ypc or Emmitt Smith

I like all lists, but I'm against all over generalizations.

Sure, it's a traditionalists' safe, consensus list.
Jim Brown, one could say, is on these lists for his NFL career and eventual reputation....that he was merely a 5th-place Heisman RB for a school with no tradition is ignored.  If he'd gone on to fizzle out after 2 years in the NFL and become a car salesman, he wouldn't be ranked on any college football list.  But human beings have some sort of blind spot when it comes to differentiating college and NFL.
It's incredible.

Here, forget all that.  I hadn't looked at the title of the article.   To propose 9 of the 10 best players were running backs is flat out stupid.  You'd have to be a stupid person to suggest such a thing.  A 7 year old would make a list like that.

well, there's also this......

Brown was a consensus first-team All-American on the gridiron as a senior and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. He set school records for highest season rush average (6.2) and most rushing touchdowns in a single game (6).

you could easily put the 5th place finish for Hypesman (which has been discussed)  as "for a school with no tradition"

I'd pick Sanders for my RB if I had a mediocre OLine over HW.

I'd guess that many times the RBs are the best athletes on the team

Lots of athletes aren't players. As Jimmy Johnson always said "But can he play"

I suspect by and large the running backs are the best overall athletes on a football team by position, wide receivers can be freaks as well.

If you put them in just about any other sport at an early age, many would have done well.  I know a lot of WRs were very good BBall players in HS.  Maybe that group would be better overall but not at bobsledding.

Is Archie Griffin even one of Ohio State's 10 best football players of all time?
