I'm still waiting for the Toyota Supra electric SUV. I hear it seats seven.

Yes, very much, with some exceptions, like when traveling.  Fast food is the Devil.
traveling and some exceptions are merely excuses

Yeah but has there ever been another burger where there was a barrier between the meat and the cheese? I'm not even talking about the cheese being on the cold side, which is rather peculiar in it's own right. But they didn't even have the cheese as the top layer, so that it is the first thing that comes in contact with the meat once you put it together. Instead it had two tomatoes between the meat and the cheese, and then the lettuce on top of the cheese.

That's just effed up, man.

I college at OU, I worked at one of the early "char-broiled" burger places, the original Across the Street restaurant.
The owner/manager had a theory of assembling hamburgers that I internalized.  I will go to my death making burgers the way he taught.
The buns are lightly buttered and toasted.
On the bottom bun goes the spread--mayo, mustard, whatever.  Then come the pickles.  Then comes the lettuce, then the tomato slices.  These make the bed on which the patty lies.
On top of the patty goes the cheese (if you're making a cheeseburger), then the ketchup (or barbecue sauce if you prefer).  Then the top bun.
Very few of the national chains make burgers this way.
They are wrong.

If the cheese isn't on the meat, how's it supposed to melt?  Hell, if you're grilling, the cheese goes on the burger on the grill, no?

Yeah, that's the conundrum in a nutshell. And it isn't like they just did that for the photo op because they consider tomatoes to be more picturesque than a slice of American cheese. The constructed one also had the tomatoes between the meet and the cheese.

Just wrong on so many levels.

Also, the meat sitting on the bottom bun makes it soggy with its leakage of grease and moisture.  That's another reason why the pickles, lettuce, and tomato should be on the bottom.

At the aforementioned Across the Street restaurant, we would put the cheese on the patty just before taking it off the grill.

American cheese is a waste.  It's tasteless.

When you melt American cheese it becomes a lot like nacho cheese; both in flavor and consistency.
