yes, there were plenty of my peers back in the 80s that didn't want to save and live within their means.
Some bankruptcies along the way, some will be living off social security
most of them survived somehow and are doing ok today

As I expect will happen with the young folks today

I understand its actually harder to start out today.  yes, there something going on.  It's not good.
It was harder for me to start out in the 80s than it was my father.

Whining and pointing to stats and blaming billionaires and waiting for politicians to make things better does nothing.

sit down, make out a budget, cut out luxuries, live within your means, set aside savings for a down payment, work some overtime, take a better paying job with more responsibility that you might not enjoy.
more or less, live a miserable life for a decade or so to get to a better place and future
I think my takeaway is everyone is whining too much about everything, older, younger and in between.

live a miserable life for a decade or so to get to a better place and future

^^^ This is the only answer, as we all probably know.  The first decade sucks usually for most.

R.E. -- cut out luxuries Nextflix. iPhones, etc.......

A couple of things here, anecdotally of course,  --- my kids do not live lavishly by any stretch.  It is still damn hard for them, even with my helping a decent bit.

My kids operate on my Netflix, Amazon, (streaming accounts in general), and are on my AT&T phone plan --- I catch the bill for the whole crew.  None of them has cable television, and they all have TV's and furniture that I gave them, or bought them.  They do pay for wi-fi, or they couldn't exist.  They also couldn't exist without a smartphone, nor can the rest of us really, but that is not an expense of theirs.

My two sons roomed together in SLC for a couple years, and when I visited I was pretty shocked at the living conditions.  Old, dated, leaky radiator pipes for heat with a bucket to catch the drippings, water stained ceilings -- pretty gross.  Utilities were included, but the A?C and heat were controlled by the management company --- $1800 a month.  I was stunned.

Inflation, groceries, gas, school tuition, not much left over.  I've seen it up close, these young people aren't all whining.  Many of their complaints are legitimate.

The takeaway:

"live a miserable life for a decade or so to get to a better place and future"  -- same as it ever was.

He's 56 going on 26. Never matured.
Now I want to know his housing history. Because I’m nosy.

Now I want to know his housing history. Because I’m nosy.
Had one, lived too high on the hog, stopped making house, utility and HOA payments, got liened and foreclosed. Stopped filing with the IRS.

I helped him with money (my wife and Ma were really pissed at me) and did all of his back taxes (didn't owe much).

I paid all the HOA and utilities for him, and the bank made a deal with him to stay (2009 was rough on banks).

He agreed to pay me back (~$18K, which I'm still waiting for - I'll never see it).

And then he did it again.

No help from me this time.

Now he rents and is stuck in a shithole.

But he has his new Rubicon, two dogs, the latest iPhone, tattoos, all the subscriptions, all of the gaming stuff anyone could want, eats out/orders in all the time, goes to Starbucks/Dunkin every day.

He's 56. Or 28.

One of the two.

One more thing. When Ma died we (3 of us) got the same amount. About $150K in 2018.

He blew through his inheritance in less than a year (rather than buy that house he complains he can't buy).

Me and the other one invested all of it.

How's that for "other news"?

Your brother gets no sympathy from me.  I have a similar brother.

I used to try to talk sense to him, but he is also the smartest guy in the world, and any disagreement leads to him shaking and seething — a ticking time bomb.

So, I just don’t talk to him anymore.

One of the best things about getting older is not giving a shit any longer, and not wasting your time on retards.

About the stepson who still lives with us and complains about housing prices, I will say he's not spending extravagantly, that I know of.  I know he binges every now and then on our Amazon account and I'll see it and shake my head, but really, it hasn't been a regular thing.  Granted, I have no way of knowing what all he really spends money on.  But he certainly isn't going out to spend, and he's certainly not spending a bunch of money on his gf (he should).  All he does is go to work and come home and go visit his gf, or she comes over to our house.

At the same time, he doesn't earn as much as he should.  (There are a lot of reasons for that I won't go into here.)  So it's like, yeah, things are tough for your generation, but you were given tremendous advantages in getting a sought-after degree but with no debt, but you didn't make the most of them.  You could've parlayed what you were given into a higher paying job, even right now.  And when he talks about house shopping, I can tell he's completely averse to anything older or with any kind of condition--such as small square footage--that might make it more affordable.  In his mind, it's got to be a house similar to ours or nothing.  Granted, our house is not that big, but it is on the newer side, and I wouldn't consider it a starter place, exactly, either now or back when I was younger.  Really, what I considered "starting out" residence was an apartment, which is all I could do back in the day.

So what he's really complaining is that he can't afford the house he currently lives in, which my wife and I pay for.

I hear him that it's expensive out there.  But I also know I can make a living situation work on his salary, because I know how much he makes, I keep on top of the local housing market, and I've done the math.  But you can't tell him that.

It also bugs me when he pays us every month and calls it "rent."

I don't charge rent.  I told my wife I wasn't interested in that when he went to work, that I wanted him to be able to save as much as he could to start out, that my parents did what they could to help me when I still lived at home, and that's what we should do for him.  When she expressed her thoughts that he should contribute, I agreed and said I'd figure out his car insurance since he's still on with us, and a rough estimate for how much he adds to the utility, electricity, and grocery bills....and then really low-balled it.  We don't charge him for anything we have that wouldn't change even if he weren't here.....Netflix, say, or things like that which would cost us the same, even if he benefits from them.  We explained all this to him, and I totaled it up and he's paid us like clockwork on the first of the month.  But he calls it rent, and I've heard him talk to his peer group about paying rent.  And I wanna be like "You don't pay rent.  If you did, you'd be paying us WAY more.  WAY."  And also, it irks me because I'm deliberately trying to give him an advantage, and when he says stuff like that, it makes me wonder if he's really conflating what he pays with rent, i.e, the privilege to live in our space.  Because that would mean he's either got a really screwed up idea of what renting a room in a house here would cost, or that he's unaware/forgotten that we're actively trying to help him.  It ain't rent, bruh.

Same.

In fact, I was 28 when we first met in person.

I know I seemed like a schmuck, but really, I was a responsible, upstanding citizen.  Trust me :)

That’s worse than a lot of 28 year olds I knew.

Granted, I had a few friends who would occasionally drop hints they were in messy spots. One even got a house!
