I’m thinking about creating a topic about 80’s movies for our Gen x heavy group.

Throwing this in here despite the fact that it could go in the EV thread (since most of the leaders for autonomy are EV companies) or into the Sporty Car thread (b/c it drives directly at whether we'd still want "sporty cars" after autonomy)...

But can you indulge me in a little thought experiment?

Let's say that we solve autonomous driving. Cars no longer need or have steering wheels and pedals. You get in, tell it where you want to go, and it takes you. And I'm going full scale here. You don't need a license to "drive" one, you don't need to be sober, and you're not legally responsible for any mistakes the car makes. It's *truly* autonomous.

The question is this: How does that change what you value in a car purchase?

The reason I ask is that many of us on this board are to an extent "car people". I.e. I think we tend to think about the driving experience of a vehicle because we're going to be the ones driving it.

That means things like horsepower, and how well it handles, etc. When I was thinking about the Mach-E, I wasn't thinking about any model but the GT. I have a lead foot and 700hp sounded like a LOT of fun lol. Hell, as you all know, I prefer manual transmission vehicles. My last two daily drivers haven't been manual, but I still have a 6 speed Jeep and every vehicle (including the motorcycle) that I'd purchased before the Jeep has been a manual. There's a certain tactile enjoyment I get out of driving a stick that an automatic can't replace. The only previous automatic vehicle I've had was when I was in college and my grandma failed her drivers test enough times that she gave up, and I started driving her Chrysler LeBaron Turbo.

So... I'm kind of a "car guy". Even the Ford Flex, I preferred to most of the SUVs of the time, because it was low-slung and honestly drove like a car. It wasn't exactly a drivers' car, but I picked the best driving vehicle I could find/afford given that I was looking for 7-seater fat pig vehicles.

And yet... If I didn't have to drive it, would I care about the horsepower and handling? Would I care about anything except the comfort, the ride quality, and perhaps the functionality (i.e. cargo room / etc)? I honestly don't think I would.

What do you guys think? Is something like autonomy going to completely change what people care about when purchasing cars? And thinking it through, what does that mean for the actual carmaker market when they're no longer competing on things like horsepower, handling, and how a car feels to drive?

(For the purposes of this discussion, let's assume that these are still owner-purchased vehicles. The transition to "vehicle as a service" is a different thought experiment.)

I think we'd get used to being productive/distracted/entertained during the drive that it would no longer matter.  No one gives a damn about the performance of a bus or taxi.  There's the old, cliche of telling the taxi driver a better route, but that's just in movies, right?  Does anyone really do that?  And for ubers and such, they're already going the route their phone tells them to, so it doesn't matter.

Cars, etc will become mobile waiting rooms, but at least you know when your name will be called (arrive at your destination).

Our neighbor once said his next car would be "Uber".  He actually did buy a used vehicle a couple years back.  But it's a concept I considered.  My GUESS is car sharing would be primary by then.

Another aspect of this is semis becoming autonomous, we have a LOT of truck drivers with no other skills who would be out of a job.  It would be gradual but inevitable, I suspect, in a decade?

Europe might get there first.

Would I own a car I couldn't "drive"?  I doubt it.  A lot of parking spaces would empty out also.

Yes. When I lived in Chicago for my first 53 years, I'd get in a cab with some dood from ______Stan who didn't know the ways that I knew. I'm not paying by the minute for some clown to drive me on the wrong route.

I still have my Radiohead CDs that I got from my Columbia House subscription back in the early 2000s.

"Columbia House, the mail-order retailer that introduced generations of Americans to new music through its "12 CDs for a penny" pitch, is shutting down."

"Columbia House dates back to 1955, when Columbia Records, then a division of CBS, launched the Columbia Record Club as an experimental mail-order service aimed at reaching customers outside the reach of traditional record stores."

"The model offered a handful of albums for a penny in exchange for a commitment to buy more at regular prices. It became a cultural touchstone, especially for teenage Gen Xers. At its peak in the mid-1990s, Columbia House generated more than a billion dollars a year in revenue."

Columbia House turned out to be a good deal for me.  I signed up for the 12 CDs for a penny, or whatever, and then had to ask my mom for money when the first CD of the month came due.  She was appalled that I had done that, and irritated with CH for contracting with a minor, so she called them and told them that I was 15 years old and had no business getting mail from them or being allowed into a contract with them.  They canceled my subscription and didn't ask for the CDs back.

I shouldn't have done that, but she was right in the regard that they shouldn't have been sending me ad mail.  Not sure how they got my name and address.  Arguably, my folks should've been screening mail coming to me from companies.
