We'll spend about $50-$60 on candy to pass out-- we always get several hundred kids coming by, and with Halloween on a Friday, it might be over 500 this year.

No costumes for us, and the kids usually just put something together from the stuff they own.  This year there's a football game on Halloween so they probably won't even bother with that.

And I didn't buy or build any new props for my front yard Halloween display this year, so zero dollars on that.

Not really so different in our little suburban neighborhood.  It's very much like the Austin I grew up in during the 70s and 80s, and not at all like the Austin I moved away from in the 2010s.

And we get tons of kids.  Hundreds.  Not just from our neighborhood, but carted in, in vans, from all over.  Some of my neighbors bitch about that but I welcome it.  They're coming to our neighborhood because it's safer than where they live, and of course more festive.  And they're not coming here to rob  the joint-- they're asking for candy. Politely.   I probably spend an extra $30 on candy specifically for those kids, and they get to come to a neighborhood that's safe, and fun, and create memories that will last them a lifetime.  I consider the investment well worth it.

That's the way you do it!

We have a football game that night which is okay, I could skip volunteering for the band that night.  But it's also our last home game of the season so it's officially "Seniors Night" where all of the seniors from each organization represented at a football game-- the football team, band, cheerleaders, and drill team-- get to walk the field, with their parents as escort.  Take pictures, show off your Senior swag, etc.

It's a big deal for the seniors at our school so we'll be committed to that from about 5-7.  Trick or treaters start showing up around 5:30 and last until 8:30 or 9.  So I've asked my sister to man our house while we're gone.  Then we'll come home, pass out candy for another hour or two, and then shut down the front, move to the backyard, and continue the party.
