SEC will require each team to schedule one "high quality" OOC opponent each year.  They're defining "high quality" as any team from the B12, ACC, or B1G.  So I suspect Wake Forest, Central Florida, and Northwestern will be taking a lot of calls from SEC teams in the near future...

I suspect that the selections for the 3 rivals will do their best to preserve as many historic, traditional legacy rivalries as possible.  That's good for the game but more importantly to the SEC and ESPN, it'll be good for ratings.  The other 6+6 teams rotated every 2 and 4 years, will almost certainly capture a lot of top team matchups.  It'll be pretty tough to "hide" them from another.  If you stack one school's "other 6-team schedule" with the lowest tier teams for one cycle, then two years later the schedule would flip and be overloaded with too many top teams.

For Texas' 3 rivals, it should be pretty easy.  The Horns have 3 historical rivals and all of them are now in the SEC.  OU, A&M, and Arkansas.  The SEC wants these games to be played.

For some other teams I think it gets trickier, but I won't pretend to know the intricacies of historical rivalries for legacy SEC teams.

Like, I can imagine Florida would want to play Georgia and Tennessee every year, but I don't know who a third would be.

And I can imagine that Georgia would want to play Florida and... Auburn every year?  I think that's an old rivalry.  But I don't know who a third would be.

Tennessee might have Florida and Vanderbilt and... Alabama?

Alabama would have Auburn and... Tennessee?  And who else?

I don't know those old rivalries well enough to do anything other than speculate wildly. :)

UGA has Clemson, Ohio State, and GaTech OOC scheduled (?) for 2030/2031.  I wonder if they drop someone.  Even earlier they have a full slate.

Georgia has P4 games in 2027 against Florida State and Louisville, against Florida State again in 2028 and Clemson in 2029. Ohio State and Clemson are both on tap for 2030.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.  If only we had some resident Vol fans to ask for their opinions. :)

I think Alabama is going to be a tough one.  Seems like several teams probably consider them to be their rival, while Alabama doesn't necessarily reciprocate.  Would LSU and Alabama want to ensure the continuation of their rivalry?

And then, things could get unbalanced.  If Alabama's three rivals are Tennessee, Auburn, and LSU, that seems a little top-heavy for most years.

I agree with the new schedule format, but I'm not sure Arkansas will be a in the Texas 3 team rotation just because it's been so long since they were true rivals.  Its' been ancient history for almost 40 years, except a few non-conference games and a bowl game or two.  What I'm saying is the league may want to provide a more intriguing made for TV match up rather than an old, non-significant rivalry (to the people that matter).

For A&M, I hope it's Texas obviously and LSU.  Just so I'm clear, we don't have the same 3 teams correct?  Texas could have say Ark, A&M, and OU and A&M could have Tex, LSU, and Miss St or OM or whatever.  I guess it doesn't super matter because you still play 3 more SEC teams.

It's funny, because we do have quite a few Vol fans here, but they all post almost exclusively in the political thread.  The hardly ever post in the actual sports threads.

UGA rivals might be UF/Auburn/Ole Miss or USCe.  UGA has never played at A&M apparently.
