The physical/mental stress and work needed to move at 60+ is ... very stressful.  You spend weeks going through "stuff" deciding what to take and what to dump (and how).  Then you move the stuff, or get movers (we had both) and then unpack and figure where all that stuff goes now in what typically is less space.  Then you wonder why you kept THAT, and left behind more important stuff.

I somehow left behind my flight bag with some fairly expensive stuff in it, my log book, license, two head sets, I don't really need it, but ... I did get my license replaced, that was fairly easy to do.  The old one was just paper, the new one looks like a DL without a photo.

I had all my HS trophies in a box in the basement, went to garbage.  No big deal that.  They seemed important at the time.

My wife about killed herself unpacking.

I don't seem to be becoming more ambitious as I get older

We went from a Townhome with 3500 sf to a 2000 sf rental condo with about 200 sf of storage in the underground garage. We got rid of a lot of shit at that point.

Then we bought this 1800 sf house with no storage* and no basement (duh).

We had movers from there to here and got rid of even more shit. Even still we moved too much stuff. The hide-a-bed still pisses me off. We bought it for $400.00 or so. It weighed 300 Lb's, and it cost us $600.00 to move it ($2/Lb). And then we quickly got rid of it in favor of a Murphy bed.

That was just plain dumb.

* There is an attic. Not going into that hotter than hell hole in the garage ceiling.

Yeah, after you hit 60 living in a large house with kids and a basement, the amount of "stuff" you have collected because you can is ... overwhelming.

I moved two houses over at one point when we got married, I had movers move the big stuff, they got a chuckle, didn't use their truck at all.  Both houses are on the same flag lot.  My wife kept telling me to throw more stuff out, but she had a basement, so I had crap in boxes I couldn't throw out in her basement.  Then five years later we moved down here so I had to go through it again.

Why did I keep that?  was a recurring comment.

When we moved from the big house to the condo, I gave away all of my vinyl and my turntable.

That was not a good move.

I kept my receiver, EQ's and CD player (all Yamaha), along with some really great Jamo wall speakers, center channel and Infinity subwoofer.

The I get here and find out it's practically impossible to do any wiring (concrete walls), so I donated everything but the EQ's to our local St. Vincent de Paul charity.

That hurt, and felt good, if that makes sense.

I left my turntable and vinyl behind.  I meant to sell the vinyl but didn't have time, some of it was probably worth something.  I hadn't had the turntable hooked up in years, it was an ancient Pioneer PL-12D manual operation that wasn't convenient.

I moved the speakers and receiver, and a few years ago upgraded the receiver.  I was quite surprised what a difference it made.  The center channel on my old receiver was out and I wanted to run one, already had it.  The new receiver really made a sound difference in sound quality.

I get a lot of you tube stuff now with classical music concerts we like to watch and listen to, the sound quality is very good.  This dude is coming here in September but I don't have tickets.

I've told y'all before that I was responsible for cleaning out my Grandmother's and Father's houses after they'd passed.........

I try to limit the stuff I keep and try to toss things out of give them away when I can.
Don't want to leave a larger burden than needed for my daughters.

But, I've been here since 89 and a large portion of the "stuff" in the basement is the daughter's stuff

I am going to clean out all the stuff I have stored above the rafters in the garage this fall.  I plan to insulate the ceiling and install a heater out there to keep the corvette cozy this winter.

I've kept almost all of my stereo equipment over the years.  What didn't come with me, stayed at my parents' house in their "music room."  But now, most of it has come back to my house, in one of the 3 rooms where I'm running amps.

What I can't find and have no idea what I did with, was my old original Technics receiver amplifier.  It was my first one I ever owned, "cheap" for the time at $160 and only 20W/channel, but I loved that thing.  I don't recall selling it, even after I upgraded to a more modern more powerful amp later in high school.

The SA-110, these things were everywhere in 1983/84.

My parents struggle to part with things.

I am not looking forward to dealing with that.

My parents recently decided that they wanted to part with their wedding china, and I was to be the lucky recipient. Ugh. Add that to all the various dishes / etc that my wife has from her family. A bunch of stuff we'll never use but can't get rid of.

And to top it off, they let the UPS Store pack it up (and insured it), and so a bunch of it showed up broken. Which means I've not only packed the intact stuff in a box, but until their insurance claim is complete, I'm still sitting on a box full of broken shit in my garage that I can't throw out until the matter is fully handled.

Hmm... Maybe this should be in the Grumpy thread :57:

Well they will get some sort of a settlement out of it.

A settlement they won't think is sufficient because this is 53 year old "irreplaceable" stuff. My dad CC'd me on the email where he was demanding compensation for the ENTIRE set, not just the broken bits, because the idea was that they wanted us to have a full 12 place settings of everything, and we ended up with only 5 dinner plates.

Of course, because I know how to google, I found replacements for the "irreplaceable" stuff at replacements.com :57:
