Illinois retires the War Chant

I will admit that it was not a great song to get a crowd fired up for a third down but I am sad to see it completely retired.

Oskee Wow Wow will probably be next to go as well as the 3 in 1 where the whole stadium still yells for the Chief

It won't be long before the Illini nickname is gone.  I wonder what they will choose for a new nickname.

Not saying it won't go eventually, but Fighting Illini was around before the Chief in reference to the WW1 soldiers memorialized a Memorial Stadium.

We need to rename Lake Huron, and change Illinois to Madiganistan.

lol, changing the names of all the places that come from native languages....might as well reinvent the alphabet.  Even English-sounding names of places are often bastardized versions of what the natives called them.

Even when it's respectful stuff and permission is given and all that, it's still wrong/ignorant.  Like that chief video...the chief of a tribe isn't running around doing stuff.  He's in the hut, sitting on his ass all day.  The youngsters do all the active stuff.  The chief is the male lion of the group - everyone else does all the work.  He's not running 50 yards or doing flips or anything.

One idea is to not name silly mascots after people.  We're not very sharp, even when trying to do the right thing.  Syracuse?  The Orange?  The orange what?  WTF??

Ugh.

They should expel all the Southeastern States from the Union, since they were all affiliated with the old Confederacy.

So when will Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and like 20 states have to change their state names.  Afterall, they are native american based and didn't get their permission.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-illinois-bans-war-chant-20170825-story.html

I have a hard time imagining an IL game without it. Why is this an offensive Indian song? Because it was a tribal drum beat? Gee better get rid of a lot of underground heavy metal that apparently also is inherently racist. So are the notes of this traditional U of I band song racist/offensive? I guess I just don't get it. I am not wired to look for ways to find things offensive.

I love to hate on U of I athletics as part of a family rivalry, and an an extension the state in general. I took great pleasure in laughing at this Chi Tribune editorial that explains just how pathetic the state of IL is in terms of gov't corruption, inefficiency, over-taxation, and being a place seen an business friendly http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...illinois-indiana-business-20170827-story.html

But I can't laugh at this. I feel bad for the long time Illini fans. This is simply sad.

CHAMPAIGN — Following a decision to drop the "war chant" from Illini athletic events, Chancellor Robert Jones reiterated Monday that the campus has no plans to eliminate the popular "Three-in-One" medley or Fighting Illini nickname.
