I think most agree that teams that "deserve" to be in the playoff might well NOT be the "four best teams".

agreed, but I also think the Buckeyes and Sooners as conference champs deserve to be there

My memory is crap, but I'd say this season is the toughest to call fro the committee

I can see legit arguments for 6 teams, possibly 7 if you include UCF

There will always be some controversy about #4.  It's inherent, but don't over think this stuff.

Hopefully none of that matters.  If they had a snazzy road win over ND this year it might, but they don't.

just saying, when your best win is a loss.  Perhaps you wish your conference mates would have held up their end and gave you better win.
Same could be said for the Irish.  Stanford and USC and FSU let them down
