"Interim" anything is not the label one would wish to have, but as an assistant, it does check a box on his resume.  If he shows he can manage a "major" program, however briefly, it would put him in the spotlight for a program like say Colorado State et al.

i actually think this could be a huge opportunity for him. they were already not expected to do well and now this is going to throw expectations down to next to nil. the schedule is fairly forgiving and there's a chance they can squeeze out 6-7 wins. if he can rally the kids and do that, he'll have some better options open up for him.
