Their bowl prep has evolved a lot over the years, but the biggest changes came after that Orange Bowl.
So when people cared about bowls, he didn't, and now that nobody does...he does.

Talk about zigging when others are zagging.

I think when you have a team like that year's Iowa team though, you have to take it more seriously.  That was the best Iowa team I've ever seen (I started watching football in 1993).  That should've been a great bowl game, but it was a dud.  This 9-3 team is a nice, but very forgettable team.

That's why I think that MSU-Baylor game was so fun, as far as these NY6 games go, neither program was in a place where they were going to take that game anything but 100% seriously.

If Virginia wasn't bad, I think the Orange Bowl could have that flavor this year, instead, I think the Rose Bowl will be the best of the 4

The more threatening USC fans are in a hissy tizzy about Clay staying and are promising to not attend.

My bet is Iowa's tribute will be very similar to the Texas tribute to Darrell Royal. Come out in 2-2 formation, TE's standing up. Hold the formation, take a delay of game, USC declines. And then move on with the game.
What is the 2-2 formation?

What's the story behind this?

22 personnel I assume is what he means?  2 backs, 2 tight ends.

Yep, a case of translating wishbone formation to 22 personal, and typing too quickly.

Most notably, Kirk allowed everyone to go home for Christmas and then fly into Miami on their own. That was nixed immediately.

Not really what I'm saying. It definitely wasn't a linear progression where he didn't care at all in 2002 and is obsessed today.

His balance of opponent prep/ underclassmen development/ player reward has ebbed and flowed throughout the years. Determining his current philosophy requires reading the tea leaves of his pre-bowl press conferences, and is still subject to conjecture.

I don't have the exact quote, but I believe he admitted to be a bit too heavy on "player reward" in 2002. If I had to guess what gets the most attention right now, I'd say underclassmen development.

Ferentz announced today that Iowa will be honoring Hayden Fry by removing the Tigerhawk from the helmet for the Holiday bowl.

For those not aware, the Tigerhawk logo was commissioned by Hayden Fry upon arrival to Iowa in 1979 as a rebranding effort.

Iowa will also wear a "BUMP" decal on the back of the helmet to honor former AD Iowa Bump Elliot, who passed away earlier this month.
