B1G-W non-race, week 9

B1G-W Champion in waiting:
  • 5-0 Wisconsin:  Even if they lose two of their four remaining games the Badgers will go to Indy no matter which two games they lose.  It only gets interesting if they lose three of their last four.
Mathematically in it but practically eliminated:
  • 3-2 Northwestern and Nebraska:  The Wildcats and Cornhuskers play each other this week.  The winner still needs Wisconsin to lose three games because they each already lost to the Badgers so they can't get to Indy unless UW finishes 6-3 or worse.
  • 2-3 Iowa:  The Hawkeyes could win a tie with Wisconsin because they haven't played them yet but the problem is that in order to get into a tie they would need Wisconsin to lose at least two additional games (in addition to beating the Badgers themselves) and they also need to avoid other losses themselves and they would need help getting past the two NU's.
Not sure they are in it mathematically:
  • 1-4 Purdue and Minnesota:  Even if Purdue won out and Wisconsin lost out the Boilermakers would still only be tied with Wisconsin and they lost H2H to Wisconsin.  They would also need the NU/UNL winner to lose two more games, the NU/UNL loser to lose another game so it isn't happening.  In Minnesota's case winning out would give them a tiebreaker over Wisconsin but that isn't much of a help.
Mathematically eliminated:
  • 0-5 Illinois:  They can't catch Wisconsin.

Yes, the race for 1st is over.  The only question left is who will finish 2nd.

If NW can win the NW-Neb game, they will have a big advantage, going to 4-2, and having beat both Iowa and Neb.  Neb still needs to play PSU and Iowa still needs to play OSU and Wisc.  So if NW wins, the race for 2nd is over.
