I suspect this young man may reflect back on his life and consider the opportunity he passed up at Nebraska in 2021. He is now at Rice.  FOOTBALLNebraska backup QB Luke McCaffrey enters transfer portal

Luke could be the starter this Saturday after Adrian's performance last Saturday

especially if Luke had improved his passing over the summer and fall camp

I have been mulling over what Nebraska could have done with Adrian Martinez. 

Nebraska could have done what Iowa did in 1968, especially if they had done better at player retention with last year's backup QB.  

Eddie Podolak, who had been Iowa's starting QB in 1967 was moved to tailback for his 1968 senior season. Podolak was not a great passer, but he could throw some. 

Podolak had a great senior season running the ball, and catching a few passes, with over 1,125 yards. He also threw the ball for another 261 yards, some of those option run/pass from his tailback position. Some of the older guys will recall Podolak had a long career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

I don't know who rides the pine behind Martinez, that could step up to play QB.

Logan Smothers made his Husker debut by playing a little more than a quarter in Nebraska's win over Fordham. Smothers completed 4-of-7 passes for 50 yards and rushed four times for 36 yards.

2020 (Freshman)
Smothers did not play in a game in his first season at Nebraska, but he was a member of the travel roster for all five road games in 2020.

Before Nebraska (Muscle Shoals HS)
Smothers was a star high school quarterback in Alabama for four years. Smothers played his senior season at Muscle Shoals High School after his father, Shane, became the Trojans’ offensive coordinator. Logan played his first three seasons at Athens High School.

I had a nice conversation with Ed Podolak in the hotel lobby in Lincoln before a Hawk/Husker game a few years back.  I recognized him immediately and his voice.

I had to tell the youngsters who he was and what he had accomplished on the field.  and a few of the young folks were Chief's fans

Seemed like a great guy.

I was wearing RED, he obviously was not.

Nice story. Eddie Podolak was one of my football heroes when I was 10 and 11 years old. He is an articulate color commentator. I think he had over 300-yards total offense in the longest NFL game against Miami, if I remember my history correctly.

Oof. Illinois is now 1-2, losing to UTSA ( yes, Texas San Antonio) and UVA.

I guess we will really see what they’re made of in a week with OU. I’d love to see NU win this game.

Pardon my lack of knowledge but what kind of offense does UNL run these days?  I assume it's not an option oriented approach anymore like the great teams of the 90's and up through the Solich days.  

Seems kind of funny that UNL got away from the type of football that made them great, not sure the reasons why but it seems like they've been wandering the desert ever since.

Scott Frost, who won a few games with the option back in the 90's as a player, doesn't consider a fullback or the option a good offense.

He tried to run the spread RPO offense that he ran at Oregon and for 2 seasons at UCF.  He learned that didn't work so well in the Big Ten.  It's still the fundamental offense, but he's incorporated more power run elements.  

The O-line is young and not playing well.  The QB play from Martinez hasn't been great.  Nothing like McKenzie Milton at UCF.  Therefore, the offense has struggled.

as for the option, there are elements and plays that use the option and even the triple option with the RB, QB, and WR.  but, it's not a staple.

Nebraska linebacker Luke Reimer was honored by the Big Ten as the conference’s defensive player of the week for his performance against Buffalo.

Reimer led a strong defensive effort for the Huskers by making 16 tackles — seven solo — and added an interception in the second half. Reimer returned the interception to the Buffalo 1-yard-line and helped set up a touchdown run that put Nebraska ahead 21-3 in the fourth quarter.

The 16 tackles by Reimer are tied for the third-most by an FBS linebacker this season, and were the most by a Nebraska defender since the 2015 season.

“We have seen that from Luke since his first day here,” Nebraska head coach Scott Frost said about Reimer after the game on Saturday. “Kid from Northwest 12th Street in Lincoln. (He) lives eight houses from my parents. We were lucky enough to get him to walk on and it was about the second day we figured we should have scholarship’d him and he is going to make a lot of plays around here.”

Reimer leads Nebraska with 28 tackles through three games this season, and has added an interception, forced fumble and pass defended.
