1. OSU - Until someone else takes the hill

2. Iowa - Six in a row and a convincing win over Wisconsin won't let me underrate them anymore

3. IU - No Penix could actually drop them more but who else?

4. Northwestern - Yes they beat IA earlier but a loss to MSU and the way IA is playing now makes a difference

5. Wisky - Three losses to teams above but no losses to teams below (OK, it may only be two but still)

6. PSU - Three in a row means something, especially this year

7. Minnesota - .500 conference record is a lot...that's sooo sad

8. Rutgers - He won't win it because of someone named Allen but Schiano deserves some COY recognition

9. Maryland - Hasn't won in six weeks

10. MSU - Really it's just as much random as anything but they did beat NW and Michigan...I guess

11. Michigan - As long as they can score 48+ they can win

12. Nebraska - Got nothing

13. Illinois - Same

14. Purdue - Hot start then....

5. Penn State - They finally appear to be playing like they are capable of. Have to give Coach Franklin credit for not letting them just quit on the season.
5. Minnesota - Best of the rest?
Since you listed PSU first I'm treating this vote as:
  • #5 PSU
  • #6 MN
If you meant something else, let me know.

Only 12 voters so far this week, 15 last week, 13 the week before that.

So far the closest races are:

  • NU/IU for 3rd
  • UW/PSU for 5th
  • RU/UMD for 8th
  • UNL/PU for 10th
  • M/MSU for 12th

I think #1 is pretty obvious, 2,3, and 4 are interchangeable and clearly ahead of the rest.  5 and 6 are just below the first four, and the bottom 8 are a hot mess.

Results posted, votes through @fezzador , 13 voters.

We have a new #2, the 5th so far this year:

  • Penn State was #2 pre-season and tied for #2 after week 2.
  • Wisconsin was #2 after week 1, tied for #2 after week 2, and #2 after week 4.
  • Indiana was tied for #2 after week 2, #2 after week 3, after week 6, and after week 7.
  • Northwestern was #2 after week 5.
  • Iowa is now #2 with the other four who have spent at least one week at #2 trailing (#3 IU, #4 NU, #5 UW, #6 PSU).

Iowa has had a long a winding road to get here.  They were #6 in the pre-season then lost their first two games and dropped all the way to #9 after week 2 before starting a long and slow climb:
  • Week 3:  They throttled MSU and passed MSU, M, and PSU to move to #6.
  • Week 4:  They throttled MN and moved into a near-tie with PU for #5.
  • Week 5:  They thumped PSU and moved into #5 alone.
  • Week 6:  They beat UNL and moved into a near-tie with NU for #4.
  • Week 7:  They beat IL and passed UW but fell back behind NU into #4.
  • Week 8:  They thumped UW and passed NU and IU to move into #2.

COTY/Hot Seat:
Tom Allen will almost certainly win COTY but RU, NU, and UMD have exceeded pre-season expectations by a larger margin.  Iowa is also close to IU in exceeding expectations.

PSU looks rough here but they have recovered so much and they have looked good while winning three straight so I think that Franklin is safe.  Harbaugh . . . I think he gets a pass this year due to COVID but I don't think he can survive another year like this one.

Vote Distribution:
We still just don't know on most of the teams.  The only things that at least half of us agree on are:
  • tOSU is #1:  Unanimous
  • Iowa is #2:  9 of 13.
  • Wisconsin is #5:  9 of 13.
  • Penn State is #6:  7 of 13.
  • Illinois is in the cellar:  8 of 13.

Last Week in parentheses.  8-13 is a mess

  • OHIO STATE (1) - did we really need a full season to get to this?
  • INDIANA (2) - I feel bad that they wasted a peak year on this season...still
  • IOWA (3) - I'm actually looking forward to whatever NYD bowl Iowa goes to
  • NORTHWESTERN (4) - we thank you for your sacrifice
  • WISCONSIN (5) - although if they played Penn State tomorrow, I wouldn't pick them
  • PENN STATE (8) - if not for a rule change, that win would have put them in the Big Ten title game
  • MINNESOTA (9) - well that was surprising
  • MICHIGAN (11) - opted out of two sure blowouts...moves up 3 spots
  • MARYLAND (6) - clearly not the same offense without Talia
  • NEBRASKA (7) - that'll teach me to buy in Huskers
  • RUTGERS (14) - wins are wins
  • MICHIGAN STATE (10) - found a quarterback, but the defense is falling apart
  • PURDUE (12) - I guess
  • ILLINOIS (13) - tough to be this bad while ranking #12 nationally in turnover margin

I added @ELA 's vote.  No changes to the order and I'm not going to recompile but note a new high vote for Michigan and a new low vote for Rutgers.
