Project Boredom: Ohio Class of 2016
« on: July 09, 2020, 06:22:56 AM »
I spun the wheel in my head and that's what popped out.

1. Tommy Kraemer (overall rank 26): This five star tackle out of Cincinnati spurned the Buckeyes for Notre Dame.  He's moved to guard and looks to lead a pretty good ND oline this year.  I think he'll be a four year starter and likely to get drafted in the spring.

2. Jonathon Cooper (33): This defensive end out of Gahanna (Columbus suburb) stayed home for the Bucks.  HE's struggled to get on the field due to injury and other good players.  He ended up taking a redshirt last year, still played in the Michigan game, where he was pretty good.  He gets one last shot to mark his stamp on the program this year. It'll be a big year for him for his NFL chances.

3. Demario McCall (44): This Ohio running back pledged to OSU, and has always been just about ready to accomplish something.  Unfortunately, it has never really happened.  He was listed as an all purpose back and that's what he's been, playing at running back, receiver, and returning kicks.  He hasn't been able to make much of an impact anywhere, despite occasionally looking like a playmaker. He gets another shot this year.

4. Liam Eichenberg (80): Another highly touted tackle who spurned OSU for Notre Dame, Eichenberg will be protecting Ian Book's blind side this year and probably get drafted in the spring.  He's been getting some talk as a first rounder.

5. Jake Hausmann (121): A tight end out of Cincy, he has never made much of an impact.  He has two catches for 13 yards and one touchdown.  He will get a shot to play this year as part of a rotation with two other tight ends.

6. Brendan Ferns (139): This four star linebacker landed at West Virginia (where his brother played after transferring from Michigan).  Unfortunately, he only appeared in eight games as he battled constant injuries and retired last year.

7. George Hill (154): This four star running back originally committed to the Buckeyes, but was uncertain about his spot and flipped to Pitt.  Sadly, when he got to Pitt they discovered a pre-existing cardiac condition and he never played.

8. Justin Layne (179): This four star corner/WR was a big OSU target but spruned them for Mark Dantonio and Sparty.  Not a bad choice - after three strong seasons at MSU he was drafted by the Steelers in the third round in 2019.

9. Luke Farrell (191): A fellow four star star tight end who pledged to the Buckeyes, Farrell has been more productive than Hausmann.  He has 29 total receptions and three touchdowns.  He's in line to start this year and the expectation is he'll get drafted.

10. Prince Sammons (208): A four star DE, he decided to head south to Auburn.  He has an extremely interesting story as he was originally from Nigeria.  He showed some ability in basketball and went through some shady process where his custody was given to an AAU coach in Wisconsin.  His parents died, he left Wisconsin and eventually ended up adopted by a family in Cincinnati.  He landed at Auburn, I think because they had another Nigerian with a similar story, Prince Tega Wanogho, who has a similar story.  Anyway, I'm not sure he's done much at Auburn though he's now an offensive tackle.

11. Messiah deWeaver (245): A four star quarterback out of Dayton, deWeaver originally committed to the Wolverines before backing out and heading to MSU.  Brian Lewerke's star was brighter, so he transferred to a junior college, then to Old Dominion where he was a backup QB last season.  I think he still has a year of eligibility but it's unclear to me whether he will play much.

12. Kierre Hawkins (329): Yet another 4 star tight end who pledged to the Buckeyes. He stayed for a couple seasons before transferring to Youngstown State, where he had 3 catches last year.

13. Jonah Morris (388): Done with the four stars, this three star athlete pledged to Indiana after decommitting from MSU.  He bounced around between DB and WR before taking his talentes to Akron.  For Akron, he had 22 catches in 2018 but missed 2019 due to injury.

14. Gavin Cupp (413): An OL from Leipsic, Ohio, Gavin Cupp was pledged to Sparty, but his offer got yoinked after he took a visit to OSU and pledged to OSU when they finally offered.  He's still around, too, never starting but in the mix this year to get on the field.

15. Thomas MacVittie (431): A quarterback this time, he pledged to Pitt.  But after going through two offensive coordinators in two years, he left for the JUCO route before landing at Kanas.  He will compete for a starting job this season.

16. Jack Wohlabaugh (437): A three star OL who pledged to the Buckeyes.  He was a backup and decided to transfer to Duke in 2018. A good decision - he became their starting center and has played extensively.  Let's see if he can get some Zion money.

17. Ruben Flowers (438): A receiver who pledged to Pitt out of Lima.  He lasted two years before heading to the JUCO route, specifically Independence Community College, which on NEtflix is LAst Chance U.  The dates line up that he might be on the show.  Anyway, he eventually landed at the University of Findlay where he has led the team in receiving.

18. Jeremy Larkin (457): A running back who headed to Northwestern.  He was well on his way to a great career when during his sophomore year he was diagnosed with cervical stenosis and whomp, his career was done.

19. Griffin Grady (477): A three star linebacker who pledged to Wisconsin.  He played sparingly before taking a medical retirement in 2019.  His instagram says he was working on a longshot Democratic senate candidate in Kentucky.

Huskers had one kid from Lakewood, Ohio

DB Tony Butler - smart kid

Tony Butler, who played his junior season as a graduate student, appeared in four games for Nebraska in 2019. Butler made one special-teams tackle in the season opener against South Alabama, and he also saw action on special teams against No. 5 Ohio State, Northwestern and Minnesota. Butler was a member of Nebraska's travel squad for every road game in 2019.

I know MSU felt strong about Hill and Sammons at one point.  This class was an absolute disaster, and I don't think they would have helped.

It's something how many kids just don't work out at the next level.  I find this exercise a humbling experience.
