Yeah if Jaguar has historically been a luxury brand, I'm pretty sure that the ad above does not appeal to the vast majority of luxury buyers.

Nevermind the fact that Jaguar styling clearly imitates Aston Martin styling anyway, but sure, "copy nothing."

The Biggest Winners and Losers in Auto Sales in Q2 2025

Groups of car buyers:

1.  Folks who want an EV and can afford one already have one.
2.  Folks who loathe the concept won't buy one (duh).
3.  Folks for whom an EV is simply not practical won't buy one.
4.  Folks aspiring to buy an EV "someday" are waiting on improved models.
5.  Folks who find hybrids to be a reasonable option.

So, the EV market is a bit flat, as more and more models become available from more companies.

You couldn’t pay me to take an EV.  

And I am of the opinion that there is no practical market for EV trucks since most people use trucks to haul or tow things.  I admire Musk but the Cybertruck is an abomination.

There is an "early adopter" factor in any new consumer product.  At times, folks really do rush to buy something new, but fairly often also there is an initial rush and then a distinct pause because many people are leary and/or can't afford and/or don't think they need whatever it is.  The companies producing the thing can be misled by the early rush (and government pressures).

The percentage of Trump supporters with an EV is MUCH lower than the percentage overall, they won't touch one no matter what.  Now, if we presume Republicans have about the same automotive needs as Democrats, this split is clearly not based on any nonpartisan analysis.

It seems to have become a significant determinant in how "we" make choices in things.  I'd bet a similar schism is present in child vaccination prevalence, shopping at Walmart, and perhaps other "nonpartisan" choices folks make, like where to go on vacation (or not).

While I do think identity politics plays into EVs to an extent, I think it's also very heavily biased by the rural/urban split. Someone in an urban area is likely going to drive fewer daily miles and have more access to charging infrastructure making them more EV-friendly. 

I.e., a Republican in San Jose, CA IMHO is much more likely to drive an EV than a Democrat in Cheyenne, WY. 

The fact is that the rural/urban split tends to correlate with the political party split, so I think that makes it difficult to suss out which is more dominant as an explainer of the phenomenon.

That is a factor, but I suspect it's fairly minor in the population as a whole.  A LOT of conservatives live in California, where gas prices are quite high, much more than some Democrats living in Wyoming.  Democrats do often live in states with high gasoline prices, so that is also a related factor.

But I do think Republicans often view EVs as silly even if they would need their needs reasonably well.  And Democrats may buy them even if they don't.

First, I don’t think EVs have much to do with politics, more practicality.  I do significant driving for work and I don’t want to be worrying about where’s an open charging station and how long will it take to charge.  

That said, EVs should never have been subsidized and this was justified because of the green agenda but EVs are no greener than an ICE.  If green was the true goal, hybrids are the way to go.

I think EVs for SOME PEOPLE are very practical, and for some they clearly are not.  I think around here for example all delivery vans could be EVs (and many are).  Work trucks could be EVs, the plumber guy doesn't drive very far in a day and can recharge at home.  A person in California might benefit from an EV if they can charge at home.

For me, the charging rates are over 40 cents a kWhr which negates a major possible benefit.

But I do believe many conservatives just don't want anything to do with them for "partisan" reasons, and vice versa.  It's not based on logical analysis.
