the desire to be part of the cool crowd is strong
I didn't like Elon or Tesla long before that made one part of "the cool crowd".

My wife was chatting with a lady in the garage about her new Tesla, she said she loved it, but hates Elon, and went on a tirade about Elon which was perhaps overstated.

I noticed her Tesla is no longer in the garage in the same space.

Much of life is virtue signaling.

This might be true for some people but it certainly isn't universally true.

There could be a point at which oil producers produce even at very low prices per barrel because a little profit is better than none.  Abouy half the price of gasoline is the price of oil, which today is $62-65/bbl.  So, you'd be looking at a steep cut in oil costs to get to $2.

Factors affecting gasoline prices - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)
I'd say that the hydrocarbon supply chain is much more complicated than that, because only ~30-40% gets used for diesel/gas.  They still need lubricants, naphtha, and a whole host of other hydrocarbons out of a barrel of oil.  My question is what do they do with the "leftovers" once you cut out the stuff that ain't gas/diesel?  Just sell it cheaper?

One can at some expense crack heavier petroleum into light products.  Most of it goes to fuel of varying kinds.

Yep, and you’ll coke your cracking furnaces up much faster as well.

My GUESS is producers scale back as they observe demand falling due to acceptance of EVs.  You could of course have some outliers who "break the rules" in OPEC+.

The next 20+ years will be interesting in a lot of ways.  I know a lot of folks still view "climate change" as a charade, a fake, which is fine, but maybe in time that will shift to "Well, the climate is always changing, nothing man can do about it." (which is also common).

2026 Cadillac Vistiq First Drive Review: The Baby Escalade

The Vistiq is the latest in a string of new Cadillacs that has dazzled us with legitimate luxury and striking design. It drives great and looks and feels expensive yet is priced and positioned as a value compared to the competition.

The biggest criticism we can levy at the Vistiq is that that the name looks like Cadillac misspelled a made-up word. We suggest buyers take that as an opportunity. With a hair dryer and some floss, you can peel the name off the tailgate and nobody will ever know you bought the less expensive one.

I thought that was still just a concept not a production car.  Shows what I know about electric muscle cars.
