The dealer might well have had major incentives to get rid of them back then.

and diesel was cheaper than gas back then
I forgot about that since diesel has been more expensive than gas for the better part of 20 years or more. I clearly remember paying about $0.85 for diesel when gas was about $1.20.  Sometimes the disparity was even more.  Most stations you had to go to a special pump, sometimes off to the side to get diesel.

That happened right around 2005, I think.  Some regulation changed in the manufacturing process of diesel which increased the cost of production and permanently made it more expensive than gas.  I also forget that it used to be the case that diesel was less expensive than gasoline.

It was the low-sulfur fuel that did that.  First it was low-sulfur, and then it went to ultra-low sulfur.  Which ironically, makes climate change worse :).

But I think in general the amount of diesel pick-ups and diesel cars just exploded in the mid to late 90's and the demand was way up.  Combine that with the ULSD and there you have it.

Cheaper than it is here, or cheaper than gasoline in Europe?  Or both?

More expensive than here for sure, but quite a bit cheaper than gasoline.  I've never had a rental car in Europe that was gasoline.  They also are nearly all manual transmissions (that may be changing).  Diesel in France is around $7/gallon, as I recall, gasoline is closer to $8 last time I was there.

Yeah I've had rental cars with manual transmissions and diesel engines every time I've been to Europe, that I can recall.  But I haven't been over since before the pandemic so can't comment on whether or not that's changing now.

I got into a very spirited European a good while back about how big our cars are and how much "petrol" we waste.  I let him know that the USA was the #3 oil producer in the world and we liked our cars big.  He had no idea how much oil we produce here, even though we're also the #1 importer.

The US is, and has been, the top oil producer for some time, some 13 million BPD.  We use around 20.

When I first went to France nearly 20 years ago, nearly all their cars were "fart boxes", really tiny.  That isn't nearly the case today.  They are smaller than ours but not tiny.  They have very few pickup trucks and their SUVs are small.

The cars in Korea look about the same as ours, without pickup trucks.  Cars in Japan are still tiny.

I'm still pondering how the EV situation may impact oil usage longer term.

When I was in Ireland last October it was a Skoda Octavia which was a manual but not diesel. Seemed like a decent car.

Will Tesla end as an historical footnote to the history of personal transportation?

Maybe, the Chinese EVs look "real" to me.  Tesla could be out of business in ten years.
