I haven't really played video games much via console in a long time.  But this might bring me back.

With the online file sharing, they can make every player 6', 200 lbs white, and wearing number 10, and within a week, everyone will have updated, accurate rosters, down to the armbands.

I haven't played video games in years but I might have to buy a ps5 for this. Never thought in a million years it would actually ever come back.

I kept my roster updated each year.  I loaned my 360 and game to my friend in Vegas with liver cancer, knowing he'd be sitting around at home a lot.
His diagnosis updates have all been positive, so that's good.

Always good to hear positive updates concerning cancer.

I bet the operation sports website blew a gasket when the news broke.  That's where they crowdsource the roster editing.

I will say, there are a couple issues here:

  • Everyone keeps talking about how quickly the internet community will "fix" the roster.  They've probably already started on the roster for next year, and it's usually not done until a couple weeks into the season.  And that's not taking every guy from scratch, you can use all of the players from the prior year who stay, with just minor changes.  Now you are saying you can fix a roster from scratch that comes out 6 weeks(?) before the season.
  • People complain when a new FIFA, or Madden, or 2k release is just "last year's game with a roster update."  If you aren't even using a real roster, then what is the point of re-releasing a new version each year?  You only bought NCAA Football '13, if you already had '12, for the updated roster.

For people who love the game, they've been playing the same exact game for 6 years now.  EA's challenge is (well, was...and will be) improving gameplay/adding in other things for people to buy the game annually.
This is how we got mascot games, all-time great teams (I miss that one), etc.

The sites that have guys working on the rosters 24/7 are the perfect place for those who complain that a game is the same with just updated rosters.  It's a free alternative.  Just download the gamertag and you have updated rosters.

For EA, as long as their new game is as good as they were before, they'll have a major success year 1, because of 2 default reasons:
1 - the market is salivating for it, and
2 - it'll be on the nextgen platform and will automatically look better and run (cpu) faster.

Basically they have the ultimate grace period built in.

I could easily edit Florida's entire vanilla bean roster from scratch in a day.  A couple of dozen guys doing that for a handful of teams each, given 6 weeks.....yeah.  And everyone doing the work would be especially glad to do it, considering.

1 - they did it in a couple weeks in the past. it really depends on the mechanism ea uses to edit rosters. but even with ps2 save cards you could have one finished and shipped to you before the season started. once online file share was enabled, it got much faster they'd part out rosters to edit and it's get done in a few days.
2 - if/when the player likeness rule gets addressed, i'm guessing ea will figure a way to include the rosters. until then, they have a ton of update and products they can use for the new games.

EA can easily get around the player likeness thing by making every player the same race and number, but including something vague enough like home state or something, if they wanted to give hints.  They honestly don't even have to do that - as the group I contributed with made a ratings set for incoming FR, and tweaks to players/teams that were deemed too high or low.  And anyway, if you're that particular about it, you can always use the community-created roster as a template and adjust to your liking.

I think it was 2 years ago, App State was overpowered after a few dynasty seasons, so I adjusted their roster down some.
