We're getting hammered by bots in a denial of service attempt. 

Just a heads up, if the site goes down I'll recover it as soon as I can.

Theyre mostly Chinese and Russian IPs.

It would be nice if there was some way to attack back and have automated crap sent to those links even if it cost us a day.

It probably doesn't work that way.  I don't understand the purpose of it.

They overwhelm the server which causes layers (applications) to fail, and one will be the security... once that fails they have absolute control over the server which they'll plunder for financial information and use the servers resources for future attacks on other servers.

Help me understand something since this type of IT is not really my wheelhouse.  I access this site most often from my work computer.  Is that safe?  I don't think they care that I goof off here a bit, but it would not be good for me if I got malware on the work machine, or, God forbid, someone gained access to protected information via this laptop.  I just need to know, cuz I gotta bounce if that's a likely, or possible.

I'm certain drew knows far more about this than I do, but in general a distributed denial of service attack targeting a server, is not designed to attack or infect clients that are accessing that server at the time.

yeah your workstation is of little use to them.  It's basically a brute force attack where as many as it takes bum rush the server, and if the server isn't hardened enough it folds- but not all at once.  services start failing... they 'want' the security to fail, and when it does everything is wide open- allowing them to take over the server and turn it into their own device- attacking more servers... if there is any sensitive information on the server they have access to that, too- such as stored credit card data or other financials... maybe username and access to financial servers... bitcoin, ect..

and... it could just as easily be a bunch of kids or clowns who do it for fun.  just to see if they can.
