78 years ago this morning 160,000 American, British, and Canadian soldiers assaulted Hitler's Atlantic Wall. They were ultimately successful but a terrible price was paid. Many of their number never got to be the frail old men that we know today. 

This picture reminds me that in their youth they accomplished amazing things.

I'll take a moment to tip my cap to the heroic sailors who helped insure victory. Most of the history of D-Day focuses on the soldiers--the infantrymen who jumped and waded their way into France--and rightly so. Nonetheless, when the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions were catching hell on Omaha Beach, Navy Destroyers came within small arms range to put direct fire onto German positions, allowing those men to push forward off the beach. And it was Navy sailors who drove the landing craft that took the Army to the beach--and who were themselves targets and victims of enemy fire.

I used to do some volunteer work with a guy who drove an LST during WWII. LST stood for "Landing Ship Tank" to indicate that it could put tanks ashore. He said, however, that it actually stood for "Large Stationary Target".

Really an amazing depiction of the experiences of those heroic folks.

The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan is still tough to watch.  Probably tougher, for me, than when it first came out, and I was 14, no fully able to grasp the reality ofnit

I know D Day is about as good as any event to point to to illustrate just how traumatic, heroic and horrible life can be (for countless reasons) but I simply cannot imagine the carnage of the Civil War no matter how many books I read, or shows I've seen.

As noted in the other thread, Grandpa GR went ashore in Normandy later in the afternoon on D Day. Sent arty at the Nazis from Normandy to Germany, and came back deaf as a post because of it. Two Bronze Stars. Never told a soul about any of it. We had to look at his DD214 to find this out.

My dad recently gave me a picture of him and the rest of his squad, taken somewhere in the Ardennes in February 1945. It is in a prominent location in my house.
