officials nationwide seem to have more issues today than 10 years ago

not sure why
Ryan McGee, who works for ESPN, talks about his dad, who was an SEC official, saying that officiating is getting consistently worse, because they are becoming more and more reliant on knowing replay will baul them out on wrong calls.

I also thonk the speed of the game, and the larger space its played in, makes it way tougher

We also have a lot more rules these days.  I agree the existence of replay is a factor.

They ( officials) are becoming such a big part of the game.   They are slowing it down so much.

They are so inconsistent on what targeting is and what Pass Interference is.

Also- it seems like the get the video replays wrong a LOT.

they got it right in the end
No they did not. Don't get me wrong, it was not dpi and had it not been called, I would have continued cussing Beck and no big deal. However they allowed fans trashing the field to get a call overturned which was unreviewable after it was announced and walked off. This is a terrible precedent and there was not even a penalty on Texas for unsportsmanlike conduct.  Just a terrible decision even if the call was the correct one imo.

Maryland 29-28 USC (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap - ESPN

The Trojans (3-4, 1-4 Big Ten) have lost their four games by a combined 14 points — all after being ahead in the second half. This time, they were up 28-14 before collapsing in excruciating fashion.

My guess is USC is a "pretty good team" yet.  The could win out from here.  Only ND is ranked and they play in LA.  So, they could end up 7-5 or 8-4 with a what might have been kind of season.  A few breaks and they'd be 6-1 or better... but they aren't.

The trash on the field thing appearing to contribute to an over turned call is indeed a very bad precedent.  I think they botched the call from start to finish.

I kind of like the idea of refs changing calls based on fear for their lives. That's a home field advantage

Not unprecedented.  Last night  I immediately thought of Game 7 of 1934 World Series.

Joe Medwick is removed from game by Landis due to unruly fans.  Cards whooped the Tigers anyways.

Akin to small-time South American soccer.  Ask Matt Damon.

If only.
I've given up predicting replay outcomes.  They seem like a coin flip.

The weirdness this year seems to be weirder than normal weird years.  It may get weirder still.

The way that word is spelled is weird.

Vandy leads Bama in SEC standings.

It's still got a ways to go to match 2007.
