Several general thoughts from my weekend in Iowa.

There is zero sense of Covid. Once out of Des Moines’ small airport nobody is wearing a mask, stores don’t have caution signs up, and there’s no capacity limitations at what would be the very crowded college bars. For better or worse, it’s refreshing after a year and a half of California beating me over the head with precaution measures.

You know you’re back in the Upper Midwest when you start seeing Menard’s, Scheels, Pizza Ranch, and Grain Belt beer.

Speaking of beer, I never understood why Busch Light existed with seemingly nobody I knew ever drinking it. Well, evidently, what Miller Lite is for Wisconsin and Coors Light is for Colorado, Busch Light is likewise to Iowa. So many 24 packs being carried to the tailgates. Busch on tap at every bar. Busch cans scattered across the lawns of every frat house and student housing complex.

We were in Highlands, NC last week and they had a mask mandate for SIDEWALKS!!!  Probably 80% compliance.  Then the stores were variable between required, requested, and not required at all.  Weird.

We then went to Lake Toxaway (nice place) and nobody wore masks except serving staff at the restaurant.  We had a nice room there, 1914 mansion now a hotel, Greystone Inn.  Nice place.

I haven't had a mask on in months here in Iowa.  I don't see many masks at all here worn by anyone.

As for Busch light being the state beer of Iowa, it's down right embarrassing.  but, it's the truth.

There is plenty to be embarrassed about in Iowa, but not football, at least not in 2021.

We have some great beer in Iowa, it's just not popular with most residents.

That's OK, more for me and at better prices.  Supply and demand

Another observation from Iowa State – I forget how much the rest of the Big 12 hates the Texas Longhorns. Of the P5 conferences, the Big 12 is by far the least represented conference whose games I’ve attended in person. And whenever I’m in Big 12 middle country it’s like I have to relearn just how quickly what I’ve seen of the rest of the Big 12 – ISU, Texas Tech, Kansas St, Oklahoma, Missouri (at the time) – resorts to bashing Texas for sport. Lots of “Horns Down” hand signs last Saturday when cameras panned over the crowd. Lots of ISU colored shirts with an upside down Longhorns logo, even though it isn’t until November that ISU will play Texas, who, by the way, embarrassed themselves against Arkansas this past weekend.

perception or reality, doesn't matter

the Horns are blamed for ruining the Big 8 and the Big 12

Speaking of ruining theyselves, it’s only game 2 of Sarkisian’s tenure at Texas and he’s already blaming the players:

In Sark’s defense this was more of a postgame reaction; this week Sark is taking responsibility and actively making a number of sensible adjustments, starting with a QB change. However, Texas is the fifth job Sarkisian has back-stepped into – Washingon, USC, Falcons, Alabama – in which, as a mediocre candidate, he’s making out with more than his employer is in turn receiving.

Pete Carroll’s decade at USC has left college football with a coaching tree of entitled, underachieving blowhards getting the benefit of the doubt for landing jobs, such as Ed Orgeron at LSU and Lane Kiffin at Tennessee and USC, before they're ready and mature.
